ЗНАМЕНИТЫЙ - ИЗВЕСТНЫЙ

Hi!
How would you explain the difference in usage of "ИЗВЕСТНЫЙ" and "ЗНАМЕНИТЫЙ"?
I've just saw a mistake in a text and not sure how to explain it:
Самое знаменитое произведение о Вечном Жиде - роман Эжена Сю...

There is no difference between these two words. You can use "ИЗВЕСТНЫЙ" and "ЗНАМЕНИТЫЙ" with an indetical success.

This is not true. There is a difference of degree. "Известный" = "known" or "well-known" (depends somewhat on the context); "знаменитый" = "famous".

знаменитый - famous

"Самое знаменитое произведение..." sounds little awkward probably because of the word "самое". The word "Знаменитое" is strong enough itself.

Его знаменитое произведение - doesn't sound really well for me as well... But maybe I just already repeated it too many times and lost the sense :))

I thought that izvestnyi is more neutral, I'd translate it with "well known". Znamenityi, I thought, is more like "slavnyi", which kind of acknowledges a certain quality.
But than - I'm learing Russian as foreign language myself, so I am by no means an authority.

известный - known (well known) - yes, but also there is a connotations of "celebrity-celebrated"

To add to what others already said, знаменитый usually applies to persons, whereas известный to both persons and things.
