меня зовут кармэла
я живу в бруклине
я форэнсик студентка в джон джее
я хочу хорошо говорить по-русски

Hello everyone :)

Been lurking around this community for awhile so I figured I'd post to say hello and introduce myself. I'm in my second semester of beginner's Russian and I'm looking to definitely improve.

Would be great to chat with folks in Russian :)

форэнсик is not exactly a Russian word. Do you study law or something? Or is it like forensic medicine?

Я хочу хорошо говорить по-русски - I want "to speak" - need an infinitive form.

Neither do I. :)
Something like судебная токсикология, if I'm figuring it right.

The forensic science in general, though, is called ''судебная экспертиза''.

Well, the person who works in this field is generally called судмедэксперт, which is an abbreviation from судебный медицинский эксперт. In your field you should probably be called судебный токсиколог, but I never heard about such people in Russian (though it can be my lack of experience in the judicial/prosecution stuff).

In Forensic Office there are people who work with bodies, and there others who work with parts/fluids etc. Toxicologists for example. They are actually forensic experts as well though they do not perform autopsies.

Oh, ok. But is it like I said in Russian?

Судмедэксперт, да.

Oh, I see. In Russia/Ukraine forensic experts graduate from medical university with other doctors. Is it the same at your place?

As far as I remember, it's more likely "Судебно-медицинский эксперт", double adjectives look weird.

P.S. Glad to meet you here :)

Yeah, probably. Anyway, everyone uses the "short" form.

Forensics - криминалистика, a person partaking in forensics - криминалист.

здравствуйте! I'm in my second semester of Russian as well. I would type more in Russian but alas... I'm not at my computer with the Russian keyboard.

It's not as hard as I thought. But it helps that I really love hearing the language... and I think the Cyrillic alphabet looks totally nifty (hence my LJ username). There's lots of similar words like телефон/telephone which helps a lot too.

As my third language, the second being Spanish, it's been a bit weird utilizing the cases to really say much without those 'fill-in-the-blank-with-the-nouns-you-know' sentences. Yeah, the cases will take some getting used to.

How about you?

Actually, there are some ways to type in Russian even without a proper keyboard. There is a russian keyboard emulator - http://www.yandex.ru/keyboard_qwerty.html - just type your text and copy it.

that works not only in IE and also emulates йцукен keyboard.

If you live in Brooklyn, you can always go to the Russian section (Brighton Beach) and practice with shopkeepers and restaurant staff. :)
