Feb. 20th, 2008 03:01 pmHey all,
This is a real random and probably a stupid question...lol but I already know the words троллейбус and трамвай; however, what is the difference?
In my city we use the words interchangeably...no difference in the type of vehicle we are talking about. I know that in Russia there is a difference, and I am reading an article about Moscow city planning that keeps mentioning both separately. Any words of wisdom for me? lol
My thanks to all of you in this community who always help me out!

Date: 2008-02-20 08:11 pm (UTC)This is трамвай.
it's an old one, but still, you can see it is using rails, just as a little urban train.
Троллейбус:
Has wheels with tyres and uses the same way as usual traffic: cars and buses.

About trolleybuses and trams.
Date: 2008-02-20 08:16 pm (UTC)These both transports are common in a way of using overhead electrical powercables.
The difference is:
троллейбус ( a trolleybus) drives on the wheels like any bus, but трамвай (a tram) needs rails.
Regards!
Re: About trolleybuses and trams.
Date: 2008-02-21 06:19 am (UTC)Not quite. Троллейбус has two overhead powercables, while трамвай has single one, because it use one of the rails as a conductive track.

Date: 2008-02-21 07:24 am (UTC)You will be electrocuted if while standing on that rail you will grab the powercable.

Date: 2008-02-21 12:00 am (UTC)Trolleybus, also called trackless trolley, has two trolley poles with two parallel wires for electricity, and they run on tires as regular buses. Off course, they can not move far away from the wires, but they can change lines, get closer to the curb, etc.
Trams ran om steel tracks, but the do not have trolley, instead they use arch that is pushed up to the wire, it moves side to side when tram turns but always touches the wire.
There are also subway trains that use tracks to get connections to both poles of electrical source. So when you fall to subway tracks try do not touch both tracks in the same time. :)
