I know no such thing (or if it does, it very poorly known or at least the concept of it) as cheerleading in Russia, but is there a word for it or some way to explain what it is? Is чирлидинг understandable, the verb being чирлидинговать or делать чирлидинг?

Usually a cheerleading group is translated as группа поддержки and that is enough, since there is almost no such thing here.

чирлидинг is understansable due to a lot of american teenage movies :)
But I don't know if there is any appropriate translation. "The cheerleading team" is "группа поддержки". But about verbs... I don't know. Probably, the awkward "участвовать в группе поддержки" (to participate in a cheerleading team).
There's a verb "поддерживать" (to support), but it has a broader meaning.

"Чирлидинг" is completely understandable, we have such thing and even have special competitions for cheerleading teams.:) Well, it's not that popular but still it exists. On the other hand, as it was already said, the more common term is "группа поддержки" (a cheerleading team). As for the verb, we do not use any modification of cheerleading as a verb (and as far as I know there's no such a modification in English too). So the Russian verb for "cheer" or "cheer on" (don't really know which one should be used in this situation) is "поддерживать". I guess it should be understandable from the context that you mean "cheerleading".:))

There is no russian analog, our cheerleading teams call themselves "чирлидинг тим". :)
The problem is that not everybody knows what "чирлидинг" is. But the word is useable.

The choice of words depends on the people you are speaking with.If they are teenagers,the word чирлидер can be used,others can be absolutely ignorant in such matters as foreign languages,группа поддержки is used in this case.
And the verb is танцевать(участвовать)в группе поддержки.
