Book Title?

Hi,

A friend has given me a book they found in a university library sale. We've all taken a guess as to what the book is a about, but I can't seem to translate the title: Русские Просветители

I'm not having a huge amount of luck with dictionaries. Any help is appreciated!

they are not просветутили but "просветители", the figures of the Age of Enlighment (or how it is called? Эпоха Просвещения), so the translation would be "Russian enlighteners", i guess...

Просветители - this is the category of the outstanding people with outstanding abilities to bring science, knowlidge and education to the public. It is very honorable name beacse of the role in history. Usualy they are christian priests or christian philosophers...

It's about the guys who took part in the so-called Russian Enlightment that lasted during the second half of the 18th century. I guess it should have a couple (or more) words about Trediakovsky (a not-so-well-known poet, but he did a lot for Russian literature of the time), Novikov (a famous editor of a satyrical journal called 'Truten' that had been in opposition to Katherene the Second herself), Fonvizion (an authour of a play called 'Nedorosl' which can be called a Russian analogue of 'Figaro'), maybe Lomonosov (a hugely famous poet and scientist, begged the state to organise the first Russian university, so the Moscow University is now called after him).
Well, that's about it. I never thought I would write this long... :)))

Hello. These comments about Просвещение are correct, but something about the translation "Russian Englighteners" did not quite make sense in English. If we translate this title into English, it would probably be something like The Russian Philosophes. We usually use the word philosophe in conjunction with the people involved with the Enlightenment.
