can anyone tell me please, what is a 'райончик' and 'отшиб'?

I'm assuming it's something rather slangy.

Thank you!

Райончик is diminutive from район.
Отшиб is usually used in "на отшибе" like in "Он живет на отшибе". It means he lives in the suburbs, in the outskirts, somewhere far from the center.

"Райончик" is a diminutive of "район" -- ward or neighbourhood.
"На отшибе" means "somewhere far away", not easily accessible/

"райончик" it's a "маленький район", small district.
"отшиб" is a "окраина", outskirt.

"отшиб" (usually "на отшибе") - in the middle of nowhere

No, it's not really in the middle of nowhere. The main meaning is not the distance, but that it is cut off.

The Oxford Russian-English dictionnary by M. Wheeler says: "at a distance (from a settlement); жить на отшибе (fig) to live in seclusion, live a recluse's life.
