As a человек, который только начал изучать русский язык I thought it would be good practice to read some lighter material such as Russian children's stories. I found a funny little illustrated collection online:

русский студент means a university student who is Russian.
What you mean is человек, который только начал изучать русский язык.

В. Сутеев is a great artist and educator. I had a book by him, when I was little, except in that book you had to write your own story, based on the drawings.
It is a good idea to start to learn the language the way native speakers would, except as we say in Russia "Сказка - ложь, да в ней намёк", so, in some sense, children's stories are never "a lighter material" :))

Stories should be adapted corresponding to the word luggage of learners. Same as with Oxford or Heinemann readers books etc..

So I'd advise to find materials which aren't too hard, but at the same time aren't too easy. Let's say - 5-7 new words on a book page is OK. If it's 20 - it means this book is too hard. Best way is to have a teacher around who can recommend things just for you.

Anyway - bear in mind that stories made for native speakers' children and stories for beginners - are very different things, no matter what language you learn. ))
