I've noticed that people say "tochno" to mean something like "Definitely?" or "Are you sure?" For instance, if I'm telling someone my opinion about something, when I finish explaining, they might say "tochno?" Can someone give a good translation of this and also tell me in what different contexts it is used? Obviously "tochno" is also frequently used in the sense of saying "Yes, exactly" to affirm someone's answer (as in -"Kto pisal knigu Prestuplenie i Nakazanie?" -"Dostoevsky" -"Tochno."), but I'm more interested in this other use.

"Точно?" just means you have doubts in what you've just heard. Sometimes you can add the details, like in "В центр идёт десятый трамвай" (Tram #10 goes to the centre) - "Точно десятый?" (Are you sure the number's 10?)

"Точно?" is used with the facts, not with the views or opinions. If someone tells you that it's -10 outdoors and you'd better wear warm clothes, you can reply with "точно?" if you don't believe it can really be -10. Yet if someone just tells you to wear warm clothes, you cannot use "точно?" in your answer.

Your own explanation is almost exhaustive. I would say that "exactly" is the basic meaning.

Well, here is another use of this word, but I would say that it is more related to the "high-level language". The use of "точно" as the comparing word. When you want to compare someone/something to someone/something. For example: "точно снайпер, выискивающий мишень" can be translated "as sniper that is seeking up for a target".

Oh I'm sorry, I didn't quite understand your post, I thought you need another using of the word "точно", but you as I "reunderstood" :) was interested in the using of "точно" as meaning of "exactly". Sorry again.

When "pisal" is used here intstead of normal "napisal", the sentence gets the Russian-language brain into some mess. As if a few authors have tried to perform this work. :)

конечно - when agreeing on a fact or confirming something
- Ты сделал уроки?
- Конечно.
- Твои друзья пошли на каток.
- Конечно. Ведь они умеют кататься, стоит отличная погода, и они не сидят дома с гриппом, как я.

именно - when agreeing or emphasizing something/somebody in the fact
- Я не хотел делать ничего плохого.
- Вот именно, только ты не спросил совета и разрешения.
- Не помню точно, кто придумал периодическую таблицу химических элементов. Толи Петр 1-й, а толи Менделеев.
- Именно Менделеев придумал ее. Она даже его фамилию носит.
