sorry, misunderstanding. i meant that yes, thank you for the link as it does indeed contain the word i was looking for. but in my electronic dictionary and every print dictionary i have come across it has not appeared.

Обкуренный - not too colourful but descriptive

Cutting timber in taiga (лесоповал) was one of the most widely spread type of prison labour in GULAG (Stalin's labour camps,) hence the band name which suggests that the band members associate themselves with prison camps subculture.

When Soviet power had just steeped on Russian ground, it was very popular to use syllable abbreviate (which have used a first syllable from each word, not a fisrt letter).

"Лесоповал" isn't that kind, but very stylized for Russian hearing. Moreover, "Повал леса" (forest sawing) points to GULAG (Sovetian prison camps departament - Главное Управление ЛАГерей) - it's work executed by sovetian prisioners. What very similiar with criminal character of "Лесоповал"'s songs.

The word exists.

It's also widely used in "на повал". Бить на повал, сражен на повал, etc.

I would not recommend anyone to study modern Russian using Dal. Just compare the meaning of the word "gay" 200 years ago and now - and you will understand the possible problems.

The expression "повал леса" is widely used in deforestation articles, documents etc. And they are modern ones. ;-)

OK, I agree that it is a part of professional slang. Still this word would not be understood by someone who is not a specialist in forestry. People in general, hearing this, will most likely think that whoever used "повал" just made an error.

As I noticed from many topics here this community serves for both learners and native speakers of the language. The latter ones use it for discussions a lot. Just as we did. =)

Still, I like words, so when you said "it doesn't exist" I couldn't help putting in my two pence. ;-)

As for learners, well - if people are interested in studying language deeper, they can read our discussion. If not - they can just skip it. So I don't consider it harmful.

2. i'd love to see your translations of their songs. cos u know, i tried to but i fail eventhough i'm russian. how could u translate "а я же ни одной не подхожу, ни вдоль не подхожу, ни поперек"?

haha yeah i get a few of their songs, but there's a lot that even with the lyrics in front of you just makes you go 'huh?'

and some of the lyrics seem a bit random

газеты врут, но все же меньше, чем трава

but their songs are nice and catchy, and for a learner like me it's a bit of a kick when i can understand something these old guys are saying.

where i'm from that qualifies as random. i like it, it's not something you'd normally hear in a lyric.

yeah i got a few more shanson songs on my computer, i like it. i don't know how popular/unpopular/wannabe-ish/old-fashioned it is to listen to it in russia, but i like it. thanks for the info tho, i've heard a lot of different opinions of this music.

That's quite understandable for native speakers. Бабки here means money. It's a slang (бабки, бабло). Like "dough" in English.

Tрава is obviously hemp.

So it goes like -

It's better to subscribe to a newspaper for this money,
Newspapers lie but they lie less than hemp (marijuana)

all i meant by random was that even in english, it's a funny thing to say. but that's what i like about russian songs like this. i'll hear it and translate and think 'what? does he actually mean that?' so i go home and check it and find out that yes, he really was saying that. it's all vocab and grammar, as i'm sure you understand))

Anyway, be careful with slang and if you talk about hemp, just use "обкуренный" или "укуренный". It conveys the meaning of being high because of smoking something. So it's more precise here.
