We were studying animal welfare in class yesterday where deforestation companies was translated as заготавливающие компании. I tried to find this verb in the dictionary but could only find заготовлять/заготовить. Now I know that this verb means to store or stockpile or to prepare. So if deforestation is 'preparing' a forest for farming why not have "заготавляющие компании"? So I've got a list of questions, if anyone can help or suggest anything I'd be really grateful!
1. What is the exact meaning of заготавливать and what would it's perfective be, would that be заготовить too?
2. When would you use заготавливать rather than заготовлять? Is it to avoid ambiguity in whether you mean to store or to prepare?
3. What is the standard expression for deforestation?
Thanks so much to anyone who can give me some advice.

As to заготавливать/заготовлять, I think they are synonymical forms of the same verb. Perfective is заготовить. Here's a dictionary entry

Date: 2007-11-08 01:26 am (UTC)"Заготовить" seldom has the meaning of preparing beforehand (Ozhegov defining dictionary provides an example of "заготовить документы"), and usually it means prepare a stock of smth, stockpile smth for future use.
Uhm, and frankly, it's different from deforestation, if you ask me.
I think that deforestation means all kind of forest destructions. While "лесозаготовка" refers to a more careful, efficient "industrial" process, which is bound (at least, theoretically) to be less harmful for the forests.
Anyway, I would translate deforestation companies as "компании, занимающиеся вырубкой/сведением лесов". ("сведЕние" is more negative and versatile of a term)

Date: 2007-11-08 01:37 am (UTC)Because "заготавливать" is a synonym for "заготовлять", and it's used more often than the latter. There's no difference in the meaning.
Deforestation, if translated literally, would be "вырубка леса", but this expression carries a clear negative connotation, so no company would say that their business is вырубка леса. So the translation given in your class is correct (if you want to be more specific you can say "лесозаготавливающие компании").

3. Deforestation = вырубка леса.

Date: 2007-11-10 03:53 pm (UTC)In first case, you need леспромхозы or лесозаготовительные предприятия or something.
In second case, you must invent words like лесо-истребительные, лесо-уничтожительные.
