Hi all,

Can you say "ради" in a sentence like "for the sake of discussion, let us assume that..." It reminds me of the phrase "ради Бога" so I hesitate to use it in this context...

Nope. Well, I think-no:)
It's better to use *в целях* or *для* if we're talking about your example "for the sake of discussion, let us assume that..." ==> "В целях продолжения дискуссии" or "Для продолжения обсуждения..."
*Ради Бога*- it's an idiom.

I guess it's possible to say "ради чего-то" if we mean something highly desirable, like in the samples above. Cf. also "ради важности", "ради куска хлеба", "смертный бой не ради славы, ради жизни на Земле" (с)Твардовский... However, it sounds slightly lofty and archaic, so it's not recommended to use freely bu the non-native speakers, especially beyond such well-known idioms.

It is used in everyday speech too. E.g. "Ради детей и мужа она жертвовала своим здоровьем."

Wrong. You can use "ради" with unanimate nouns too. See Mayakovsky's verse, for example: "Изводишь единого слова ради тысячи тонн словесной руды".

Note to Russian learners: word order in the above sentence is a bit unusual, though definitely valid. Ради refers to единого слова, not to тысячи тонн. The normal word order would be "Изводишь ради единого слова..."

Of course, you can. Go to www.nigma.ru (biggest russian meta search engine) and type there "ради продолжения". Then look at the results.

Btw - I can recommend this method (with search engine) when you aren't sure about something. When you get thousands and thousands of examples, it tells you that it's not just a coincidence. =)

Yeah - "ради дискуссии" was in the first post here, I just looked at the wrong sentence, sry.

Tho it doesn't matter here - use "ради дискуссии" in the same search engine and get same zillions of results.

I didn't translate anything here. Just gave some advice concerning search engine verification using phrases that people posted in this topic. That's my point. It shows that you can freely use "ради" with inanimate nouns. And how exactly you translate this or that is a different question.
