i think it would be в США because the ending changes, but the first letters still stay the same...

edit: okay so в США it is! another question:

when describing American cuisine (which some may say is non-existant. Mickey D's?) would you use Американская кухня as i have in my sentences below?

В России матрёшки дешевле, чем у нас. Но в США русская кухня дороже, чем в России. Американская кухня хуже русской кухни, потому что русская кухня вкуснее американской кухни, но американцы толще русских. Почему?

You are right. It must be США. Abbreviations usually don't change.

There are several important grammar issues that I would like to point out.

1. In Russian, only names are capitalized (humans', countries', institutions' names). Nationalities and adjectives derived from them are not. So it is русская кухня, американская кухня, русские, американцы.

2. Но в США, русская кухня дороже, чем в России - you do not need the comma after США. Same for В России, матрёшки дешевле, чем у нас - no comma after В России. You need the one before чем, this is correct.

3. кухня is feminine, so it is американская кухня, русской кухни (not русского кухни, американского кухни)

Just one more correction - you can count out two words from this sentence "Американская кухня хуже русской кухни, потому что русская кухня вкуснее американской кухни, но американцы толще русских", because you don't need to repeat the word "кухни".
Американская кухня хуже русской, потому что русская кухня вкуснее американской, но американцы толще русских.

I'd rather say: "В России матрёшки дешевле, чем у нас. И русская еда в США дороже, чем в России".

("Но" = "but", but there is no opposition: both матрёшки and русская кухня are cheaper in Russia than in the USA. It seems more natural to speak about cheap or expensive food (еда), than cuisine, though the latter variant is not impossible. However, speaking about good or bad cuisine is OK. The word order now seems more idiomatic.)
