I'm trying to get my Russian back into shape after neglecting it for many months.  I picked up a copy of Azazel by Boris Akunin, and am disappointed in my reading comprehension even as I read the first page!  Can anyone help me out with the following phrases?  I'm not having too much difficulty with the vocabulary, just with the set phrases.

"...случилось безобразное, ни в какие рамки не улкладывающееся происшествие."

"Солнца припекало не на шутку, и скамейке, что оказались в тени, все были заняты."

"...обращенной к решетке..."

Thanks!

Not sure that "Azazel" is a good choice to refresh your Russian. Akunin tried to imitate Russian stylistics of the end of 19th century. To do that he sometimes overused archaic constructions, which are far from modern spoken Russian. But yes, it's a good reading.

"...случилось безобразное, ни в какие рамки не укладывающееся происшествие." (note the spelling of "укладывающееся"). = "...a scandalous, completely outrageous event had occurred". "Не уклАдываться ни в какИе рАмки" is an idiomatic expression meaning to be outrageous, completely unacceptable.

"Солнца припекало не на шутку, и скамейки, что оказались в тени, все были заняты." = "The sun was blazing hot and all the benches that came under the shade were occupied." Here, "припекать" means to be scorching; "не на шутку" is an idiom for "strongly", "badly", "quite".

"...обращённой к решётке..." = "Facing the grate", most likely. Unless its something like "рЕчи, обращённой к решётке", which would mean the "speech addressed to the grate" (and presumably someone behind the grate) in genitive or dative case.

I also think that there is typo. It must be "Солнце припекало", not "Солнца припекало"
