How would you say that you were confused about something? Is it the word "смушённый"? If not, how is смушенный used?

i will say "меня это смущает" you can use "смущённый" in... hmm.. in "я слишком смущённый ("смущён" will be more right)" for example

it's смуЩённый :) and it can also mean embarrased.

"я смущён" is confusion in the sense of embarrasment. If you mean that you didn't know what to do, or couldn't understamd something clearly, you would say something like "я запутался"

Perhaps it's best to illustrate usage with examples:

"I am confused" = "Я запутался".
"You really have confused me" = "Ты совсем меня запутал".
"I am confused about he wants" = "Я не понимаю, чего он хочет".

"Его слова меня смутили" = "His words disturbed / discomfited me." Discomfiture is the best English equivalent I know to "смущение".
"Он смущённо откашлялся" = "He cleared his throat, looking all at ease."

Is it often happens, there is no direct mapping from the English lexeme to the Russian one, or vice versa. One has to pick the best words based on the context.

No. Well, basically yes, but in fact in modern spoken Russian word "смущённый" is much closer to "embarrased" or "awkward".
"Confused" is closer to "запутанный" or "заблуждающийся". There IS word "конфуз" meaning "embarrasment", but it is rather obsolete.

I'm confused = Я запутался or Я в растерянности, depending on the context.
