I have a question about Russian slang that I've wondered about for a while. Is there another way to say "yes" besides "да"? Like in English we have "yeah" and "yup." Is there a similar thing in Russian?

He thought you were saying "есть" -- which is the correct way to say "yessir" if you're in the military service (when given an order.) If you are asked about something in the military, you answer "так точно" for "affirmative" and "никак нет" for "negative".

Russian military has no direct equivalent; it is covered by more general "ложись!". In American and British army this is a signal that a grenade or other explosive is about to explode in a closed space (a trench, a room, or any other enclosure.) If you ever played Counter-Strike, characters always shout this when a grenade is launched; which is not very correct, because in the real army, they won't shout "fire in the hole" in an open space, only within an enclosure.

Online I see Мда a lot, a contraction of Ммм and да. Ага is like "uh-huh" and I read in a past post that угу can imply boredom, so you might want to find that post to figure out the connotations first (or read it in enough contexts to get a feel for it).

Note that "уГУ" ("yes") can be pronounced with mouth closed (maybe when holding something inside, or with keeping it open, maybe when a dentist is asking you a "yes-no question").
The "no" answer in this case is "Уу" or "Аа" (two syllables, the first one is stressed).
