Aug. 9th, 2007 11:59 pmI've heard some (relatively-)modern Russian music that was just brilliant and even had my main lecturer's seal of approval for training your ear for Good Russian™ (see post about Zemfira ;)). As admirable as this is, it means it will train me to not understand a word of Real Russian™ (for better or worse)-- though I could make great... political speeches? get good marks at uni? woo Russian girls? ;)
Anyway, it was still lovely. It was a vocal/keyboard/ballady type female artist who sang Anna Akhmatova's work as lyrics... or was it Marina Tsvetaeva's? Does anyone know who this vocal angel is?
Or even, does anyone know any other "good" modern Russian music? It seems that, besides Zemfira, all Russia produces rock and dance music that is very... Russian (for lack of a better explanation). Obviously the world has a smorgasbord of musical tastes, but something about (most) Russian music seems a bit... masochistic? ;)

Date: 2007-08-10 05:39 am (UTC)One song that has some meaning and can be easily understood came to my mind: Brainstrom - Выходные. I'll try to post it in this society.

And that's one of Radiohead's more lucid ones!

Date: 2007-08-10 10:25 am (UTC)At this time almost entire music in russia strictly divided in either bard music with nice lyrics but boring melody, or complex and beauliful progressive music which are instrumental, or relatively fine rock-music with typical hardly-sensible rock lyrics, or dance having ugly lyrics and ugly music but is fine performed. Also most lyrics itselves except of pop are "masochistic", pessimistic or related to politics, if i understand you right. Also theres a scores of nice bands singing in (bad-spelled) english just because they don't count on russian folks chosen music that is very... Russian
Yes, i can suggest bands like Моральный кодекс, Эдипов комплекс, Сюткин и Ко, Сплин, Ноль even Ария (or even Алсу as the example of fine pop-music performer). But i personally like early music: Цветы, Автограф, Песняры, early Алла Пугачёва etc which are fine performed, fine produced and have fine properly spelled lyrics at the same damn time!
So, what do you looking for?

Date: 2007-08-10 11:07 am (UTC)You mean like Virus, Kraski, Tatu, etc?
Something more along these lines, please
Probably one of the worst songs I've ever heard in my life (and this is a high honour to attain, as I've heard some atrocious music) was some Russian group doing a cover of O-Zone's Dragostea Din Tei, only singing it in... angry growls. I actually wanted to throw a bottle through the PA

Date: 2007-08-10 12:33 pm (UTC)Personally, i dividing our pop-music in Tatu, Dima Bilan, Валерия etc as well-performed bubble pop, and Вирус, Руки вверх as totally unmisical occurence. Really i can't judge, it depends on taste, some people even prefer "bedroom-played" penal art also known as "Руский шансон" :))
"Something more along these lines, please"
Our relatively famous instrumental progressive bands are Затерянный мир, Inner Drive, Rushus Project, Infront, Rite Band, Disen Gage, Exit Project and of course great "Kostarev Group" and Арсенал.
There's also prog-bands with vocals, for example:
Agnost Dei (that Kursk guys performing brutal prog-metal but really fine)
English lyrics: NyL, The Decomposers, Eternal Wanderers (where i participate as bass-player).
Only band with both Russian and English lyrics i know is my own — Quorum. :)
I should warn you that overwhelming majority of our progressive bands (including most of listed above) perform music fine, but have really bad singers — actually worse than worst pop may have, and it is major reason why our best prog-rockers play instrumental music.
Unfortunately every non-bad singer thinks that he was born to be a star and never want to deal with "non-commercial" projects.
Oh, i hope that all above isn't off-topic.

Date: 2007-08-13 02:45 pm (UTC)"Город золотой"

Date: 2007-08-17 02:35 pm (UTC)Сплин is also fine for music (not for vocal though). Especially their recent song after the text by Vladimir Mayakovsky. The song is called "Маяк". If you like the "silver age" poetry, and you seem to do, you will like it. Mayakovsky is a difficult poet for the learners, but his rhymes are very interesting and his metaphors are very non-standard.
Personally, I also like "Високосный год", they are very lyrical.
I believe most of the songs can be found in p2p networks like http://emule.com and the like.
