How would one ask "how are things" in relation to something more specific than just "как дела" - such as "how is school" or "how are your studies going?"
I've seen "как поживает ваша семья" a few times but always to ask about families, so i'm a little wary of using поживает to ask about anything else.

For example:
как школа (как учеба), как в школе (как на учебе)
как работа, как на работе?

что нового в школе or что нового на работе.

you can also say "как твои дела", adding some words pointing at the topic of your question.. for example: (you may add "твои\её\ваши" e.t.c, but its not necessary)
как твои дела в школе?
как твои дела с учёбой?
как твои дела на работе?
or
как твои успехи в учёбе?
"как поживает твоя учёба" is also fine but isn`t used often.

or short variants, as mentioned above:
как учёба? \ как на учёбе?
как школа? \ как в школе?

you can't say "как поживает твоя учёба". 'поживает' is from 'жить' (to live) and is only applied to people.

(all below is just my very humble opinion, i know a lot of people talking this way, still i do not know if it's absolutely correct)
as matter of fact, one may use the form "как поживает твой\твоя\твоё [subject]", if the subject is 1) person OR 2) process 3) IN process.
for example, if i had an ongoing paperwork, let's say an essay to write for the school, the teacher might ask me "как поживает твоё сочинение?", thus adding some irony or even a little sarcastic tones to the question, as if the essay was not just a peace of paper, but got alive and is living it's own life. in this very case it might mean that i was already late with that essay, and teacher had asked about it several times, but he might still be waiting for that work. another example - let's say i need to have a travel papers (visa, insurance, etc.) prepared for some journey. the process is taking some time, and most of the time does not depend on me or my actions, but i am aware of progress. then one could ask me "как поживает твоя виза\страховка". anyways, it's not that unusual to use "поживать" in conjunction with objects, it just shows a matter of personification towards object.
