How would you call a stray dog in Russian? Yandex gives me бродячая собака. Is there a shorter, more colloquial word for them? Closer to the English "feral" than "stray"?

Nope. There's only one population of wild dogs in the word, IIRC. That's australian dingos, and they are exactly the same specie as domestic dogs -- Canis Lupus Familiaris, and, as proved quite a long time ago, are not wild in strict sense, but feral, i.e. descendands of previously domestic dogs, -- laglely like North American mustangs, which are feral domestic horses.

Absolutely not. Дворняжка can belong to someone, and if it does, it is not a stray dog any more. On the other hand, even a pedigree dog can be lost from its owners and become a stray.
