Can someone please tell me what "Shut up" or "Be quiet" (or both) is in Russian? And how to pronounce it? Thank you!

shut up - "Заткнись" (?) "Закрой рот" - more polite
Be quiet - "Тихо"
depends of context

Do you really think "закрой рот" is more polite??? :)) I don't think it can be polite at all.

in my school teachers sometimes say "закрой рот" and it is sounds not very rude.
But i cant imagine in what fury they need to be to say "заткнись!"

Well, for me they are both equally rude.
Honestly if a teacher told me "закрой рот" I would be insulted.

so what should teacher say?
"замолчи" and "ведите себя потише" would be good only for junior school :)

Why? I don't think only juniors need respect:)

kids in high-school will just IRNORE "замолчите" and keep screaming

You can also use: "Замолчи!" - (stop talking!). Stress on last syllable, [zamol'tchi].
Or just: "Молчи!" - (do not talk!) - [mol'tchi].
Both this are made from "Молчать" (be quiet, do not talk) and are more acceptable, if you don't want to made someone angry.
Indeed, there are many ways to ask someone to stop talk - what situation do you mean?

BTW, "Заткнись!" is nearest to "Shut up!", as far as I can decide. And it is also absolutely impolite :)

So, "заткнИсь" (or "заткнИтесь" if addressed to a group) or even (obscene!) "завалИ ебАло" (used only when addressed to a single person) will be a good choice :-)

Ok, if you are in a swear mood, you can say even: "Пасть закрой!" - "Close your mouth!" (means animal mouth).

Замолчи is used repeatedly in the movie "Everything is Illuminated" in this context.

заткнись, замажся, заглохни (глохни), закрой варежку (рот, еб***ник) :)

I'm afraid, foreign students can't read your "еб***ник" right anyway, so this information is not very useful for them.

If you have nothing to say except obscure obscenities (written with mistakes anyway,) what's the use of your input?

"Shut up" (very expressive): "заткнИсь". Sometimes it is softened (e.g. for colleagues when you are at the phone): "заткнИсь, пожАлуйста" ("shut up, please").
It sounds like [zahtknees'].

"Be quiet" may be different - from "тИше, пожАлуйста" through "тИхо!" and up to "цыц!".

With mistakes? I really want you to show me them. And by the way adamandtheants wanted the translations of "Shut up" or "Be quiet" and didn't mentioned about level of rudenes.

Well, sorry about mistakes, I was copypasting (as you were not the only one SO original.) Anyway, did you really think that since you decided to teach somebody Russian obscenities instead of "neutral" words, it would be a nice idea to beep out part of the obscene word? If the person you teach had no idea what kind of a word was that, how on Earth was he/she supposed to figure out what was beeped out?

I think if I was wanted to know exact meaning of the exact word (especially a "neutral" one) i ll go search for it in dictionaries (internet, halleluja). But if i decided to ask the meaning of the word in place like this community, than i suppose that i want a variety of the answers, not only the "neutral" ones.

PS Did't see that i was repeating, just replied from the friends feed (or whatever it calls)

When I was teasing a Russian friend of mine she said "Tikho, tikho" as in "be quiet, simmer down."
