Both are correct. You can use "думают" with "людей" and "думает" with "много" (="множество")

I prefer to say:
"Многие думают, что"
or
"Многие люди считают, что"
or
"Множество людей считают, что"

But plural for "считают" in all cases.

I'd say "Множество людей думает"... Who? Множество людей. What is Множество людей doing? Множество людей думает. But you're right, both variants are possible (http://www.evartist.narod.ru/text1/64.htm). :)

Of course, a lot of people use both of variants without thinking which of'em is correct. People just warming over mistakes in speech they're heard from other people.

It would be better to say "множество людей" or "многие люди" rather than "много людей".

For "множество людей" the both forms are correct.

And the most preferable word is "множество" instead of "много" in this context.

Well, I'm not much into linguistic terms, but I have a good "feeling of the language", so excuse me for using wrong terms, but in my opinion the verb "думать" here is "attached" to a neutral "много", not to "людей". Thus the only way that is fine with me is "много людей думает". However, "многие люди думают" for in this sentence "думать" is "attached" то a plural "многие".
