I think that if a person learns a foreign language (it doesn't matter, what) it's better to read firstly easy-read books, maybe fairytales or smth like that. For example I began reading english-language literature with Alice in Wonderland by Karroll =) I think it's been very useful for me!

But these books are too difficult for foreigners, I think.

Well, it´s really very subjective and individual, you know... Alice In Wonderland is not exactly the easiest book to understand, with all the puns and allusions which make it a complicated text even in your mother tongue.

Fairytales, as well as other types of children´s literature, are EXTREMELY difficult for non-native speakers (if you take an unabridged version, I mean). It´s the last thing I´d advise a Russian learner to choose to read.

BTW the post says the books are for those who already have the necessary command of Russian.

But it's a really good language training! Cause in our Univercity the entrants MUST know almost every proverb or idiom. And I even don't know 'em in Russian well enough. So the books can help. I liked Winnie-the-Pooh and stories about Alice - they're really amazing. I can't object, sometimes they were a bit hard to understand, but the book contained some useful explanations.

I've read. But I really have some doubt in that they're the best variant even for advanced. Probably it would be better to read for example russian great?

You know, it sounds at least ridiculous about knowing "almost every proverb or idiom", even for a University entrance test, sorry;) The number of these items is practically unlimited, not to mention all the regional varieties...

we have a non-test system. And they try to fail every student on an examination if he isn't a relative of smb from the examining board or if he hasn't paid

Not to go completely offtopic, I can just say again that reading Russian fairy tales is the last thing to do if you want to learn some really useful vocabulary (nevermind the admission board monsters;))

I disagree about the first book - i think it's very difficult to understand for non-native speaker. It could be an interesting challenge for someone very advanced, but even then - the cultural references are so vast that i doubt it would nearly as funny.

its the same as to say Never watch Lynch films because you wont understand.
anyone reading any book will have different idea behind the plot.
and in case of Strugatskie the main thing is a very nice example of the russian language.
