how would you say 'to crank' as in an old projector? I need to say, "a Mutoscope, which one/you must crank to see the film inside (through an opening)."

can the word киноаппарат describe any kind of film projector like a Mutoscope, Kinetograph*, etc? is the word зоотроп generally understood?

thanks in advance ;)

I think киноаппарат is a thing with which you make the film. The one with which you show the film is (кино)проектор. The other names you listed are not used and will not be understood.

crank is probably вертеть ручку

I am a native speaker and never heard this word before. Are you sure that it will be understood by general audience and not only by cinematograph history fans?

In Russian we have Мутоскоп, but as a зоотроп it isn't generally understood.
Диаскоп and диапроектор are wider famous.

I've never ever heard Мутоскоп in my life.

And you must pay attention on next rule: if the word ends on -скоп it usually means mechanism you must look in and if the word ends on -проектор it means mechanism that projects picture or pictures on any screen (wall for example).

So instead "isn't generally understood" there must be "is very special term"?
Ok, you right. But the word exists. In distinction from for example misterious "кинтограф".

Shame on me, it is "Кинетограф"

Зоотроп (zoetrope), кинетограф (kinetograph) and мутоскоп (mutoscope) are different mechnisms.
Zoetrop sometimes means toy. Kinetograph, phantoscope, mutoscope and also zoetrop are archaic mechnisms for watching films inside them. And all these four words aren't generally famous.

The most famous word is (кино)проектор, oryx_and_crake is right. But it projects record.

I think many people in Russia heard about and even used slide projector (диапроектор), so they must understand the word диаскоп (diascope). Of course, diascope isn't completly what you need, but at least it means that for watching film you must look in and you must crank.

To my pity, I can not say what of al these archaic mechanisms shows picture "through an opening". What is the word which definition you trying to translate?
