I'm having a very difficult time explaing how to make blini for a class assignment (which is admittedly above the level which we are at right now because we have learned no specific cooking verbs, just готовить).

I would like to know how to say separate an egg, beat an egg, and would жарить work for blini? I don't know that they're really fried... I suppose they are. Also it would be helpful to know how to say melted butter.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Technically блины are prepared on a frying pan but you never say жарить about them - only печь (я пеку, ты печешь, он(а) печет, вы печете, они пекут)

separate an egg - отделить белок от желтка (белки от желтков)

beat an egg - взбить яйцо

melted butter - растопленное масло

I remember that was a weird past tense for печь as well when the TA for my class was telling us (very briefly) about verbs we could use, but I don't have it written down.

Wrong. Топленое масло is a separate product (processed butter), while растопленное масло is an ordinary butter that was melted, and this is in fact what people use for making pancakes.

Ok. I've just never heard "растопленное масло", my grannies always called it "топленое масло".

I would say, that "нажарить блинов" could also be herd...
at least, some of my friends, native Russians ;) are telling so...
