Hello, всем!

I have a friend who sent me an e-mail in Russian, but unforunately, it came out looking like a bunch of asterices. I fiddled with the character encoding in the browswer, but to no avail. Is there any way to decipher this e-mail, or should I just give up?

Спасибо заренее!

Hmm, try this (http://iclub.nsu.ru/~cher/code/english/). If that doesn't work you can try the other results when Googling for "Russian decoder".

You should fiddle with character encoding in your e-mail client, not browser. Most probably, it will be KOI-8R.

I've had that problem in the past. Once, I hit "reply" to tell the sender that I couldn't read a damn thing he wrote and could he please send it to my other address. Somehow, by hitting "reply," all the text became legible in the message window. It was crazy. So until I moved on from that address, that's how I handled the situation. If you haven't done it yet, give it a try.

There is a program called Штирлиц (Shtirlitz)

it tries to decode any chain of text encodings automatically.

here it is:
ftp://listsoft.ru/pub/1177/Shtrl4.exe

or here, if the above doesnt work:
http://www.listsoft.ru/programs/1177/

(press "Скачать: Shtrl4.exe с listsoft.ru [576 Kb]" link and wait 10 seconds on the next page)

Where do you view this email? If in browser, then on which site? (AOL, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc).

If in e-mail program, then which program do you have?

Use it
