Hello Everyone,

I'm doing a presentation about Caviar in my Russian Class, and there are a few sentences that I wanted to make sure have correct grammar and vocabulary. Here they are (with translation):

Икра — сырые или приготовленные яйца рыб.
(Caviar is the fresh [raw] or prepared eggs of fish) (Definition)

Яйца любой рыбы?
Самый дорогой вид икры-стерляди (очень редкая).
(Is caviar from just any type of fish? The most expensive type of caviar is from the sterlet (very rare).)

Икра едят, по традиции, на свадьбах и праздниках.
(Traditionally, Caviar is eaten at weddings and on holidays.)

Часто едят на бутерброде или на блинах.
(It is often eaten on buttered bread and on blini.)

В Америке, очень трудно найти икру осетра, потому что Обслуживание Рыбы и Дикой Соединенных Штатов запретило импорт этой икры.
(In America, it is very difficult to find Caviar from the Sturgeon, because the US Fish and Wildlife Service banned the import of Sturgeon Caviar.)

Also, I wanted to see if the following words were correct:

Fake/Counterfeit [Caviar]: Подделкая Икра
Illegal: Незаконно
Multicolored: Разноцветная

Thanks!

may be. but it is true. you can tell "рыбьи яйца" also

We simply don`t usually explain the meaning in this way - икра is икра, not яйца :)) Maybe, личинки, though. It sounds more russian.

Самый дорогой вид икры-стерляди - better: Самый дорогой вид икры - икра стерляди. You`d better repeat this word.

Икру едят, по традиции, на свадьбах и праздниках

Also, you don`t need to use komma after В Америке.

Обслуживание Рыбы и Дикой Соединенных Штатов - more probably, Служба по контролю за рыбой и дикой природой. Anyway, you have to place a name after Дикой, because it`s an adjective. The most common collocation for wildlife is дикая природа.

Не подделкая, а поддельная.

That`s all :)

Have luck!

личинки? are you kidding? biologically caviar is eggs, and fish cannot have личинки at all, it's insects who have them.

neither яйца nor личинки. Just икра.

From the biological point of view caviar is fish's eggs, whether you want it or not.

Biologically, yes. Linguistically? You gotta be kidding. Even БСЭ, feeling bad linguistical quality of this definition, says "женские половые клетки ряда позвоночных и беспозвоночных животных (яйца)" (note how far away they put "eggs" in this context :))

if you're doing your presentation from biological point of view, then it is ok. but it seems to me that you asked to make your speech correct and understandable,mm? we NEVER say яйца to mean икра. just make up your mind to it :)

I am not doing this presentation, [livejournal.com profile] sheketbavakasha is. This is how (s)he wants to say it and it is correct from the biological point of view. (S)he is not saying яйца to mean икра. No one is saying яйца to mean икра. I do not propose to say яйца meaning икра. Яйца is just what the caviar is from the biological point of view. Happy now?

Not really. It strongly depends on context and there is a rule for that.

Wrong. It strongly depends on context and the first variant is used more often.

Икра — сырые или приготовленные яйца рыб.
Sounds strange but it is possible. E.g. here's the definition I've got:
"Икра - продукт питания, представляющий собою яйца рыб, обработанные особым образом."

Самый дорогой вид икры-стерляди (очень редкая).
Самый дорогой вид икры - стерляжья.(an adjective is better)

Икра едят, по традиции, на свадьбах и праздниках.
Традиционно икру едят на свадьбах и других праздниках. (A wedding is a "праздник" too :)

Часто едят на бутерброде или на блинах.
Икру часто едят в виде бутербродов /на бутербродах - (?) not sure/ или с блинами.
In Russian plural is more general.

В Америке, очень трудно найти икру осетра, потому что Обслуживание Рыбы и Дикой Соединенных Штатов запретило импорт этой икры.
В Америке очень трудно найти осетровую икру (an adjective is better), потому что природоохранное ведомство США (I'm not sure if it is accurate. But you can use it anyway)запретило ее ввоз (импорт).

Fake/Counterfeit [Caviar]: Поддельная икра
Illegal: незаконный, нелегальный (an adjective)
Multicolored: разноцветная. Well, that's right but do you want to say "разноцветная икра"? That's impossible as it sounds as if there are some other colours besides traditional red and black ones. Or even worse that caviar (an egg) is multicoloured e.g. black-and-white, yellow-green-blue etc.
Some expressions instead of "разноцветная": Икра разных цветов. Красная и черная икра.

I think стерлядь is sturgeon but you would do better if you look it up in a dictionary. Certainly not "sterlet".

Fake/Counterfeit - поддельный(-ая)

on holidays - sounds like each Saturday and Sunday you get to eat some caviar which is probably wrong. Use "celebrations" or "festivities".

Hm, I take back the words about "sterlet". It is a real word. Век живи, век учись. (One lives, one learns...)

Икра — сырые или приготовленные яйца рыб.
Икра — это рыбьи яички.

Икра едят, по традиции, на свадьбах и праздниках.
Red икра is very expensive, а на свадьбах there're a lot of hungry guests, so икра don't едят на свадьбах

Часто едят на бутерброде или на блинах.
Also wiht водяра and коньяк

В Америке, очень трудно найти икру осетра, потому что Обслуживание Рыбы и Дикой Соединенных Штатов запретило импорт этой икры.
Stop Обслуживание Рыбы и Диких Соединенных Штатов!

Also, I wanted to see if the following words were correct:

Fake/Counterfeit [Caviar]: Подделкая Икра Жабья икра
Illegal: Незаконно Обычно; как правило
Multicolored: Разноцветная Жабья

I appreciate your attempts at joking but all of the following is wrong:

Fake/Counterfeit [Caviar]: Жабья икра
Illegal: Обычно; как правило
Multicolored: Жабья

яички is also wrong because it means testicles.
