I was reluctant to do this, but everyone else is, so I thought what the heck.

This summer I will be in Nizhny Novgorod studying at the linguistics university. Seeing as it isn't Moscow or Petersburg, information is hard to come by. I know bits and pieces about the big sites (the дом музей, the train museum, etc.) but can anyone offer either some vague information about the city, what to expect, the university, etc.? I was all excited until someone made me nervous about not knowing anyone (I'm an independent traveller, I live in NYC and moved here without knowing anyone, and I can speak Russian decently, so I'm assuming that I will be ok, feel free to correct me)

And to make it somewhat relevant, I've been seeing the adjective version of the city's name in various places. It would just be used comparably to other adjectives, right? The only time I've used this is in describing Grozny's airport, so I want to be sure I'm interpreting it correctly).

Nizhny Novgorod is described in Lonely Planet's Trans-Siberian Railway Guide (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/174059536X/002-4095274-2539212?ie=UTF8&tag=3636363-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=1789&creativeASIN=174059536X) (which probably means it's in their bigger Russia (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1741042917/002-4095274-2539212?ie=UTF8&tag=3636363-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=1789&creativeASIN=1741042917) guide as well). If you are going to be studying in Russia, you'll probably want to visit other cities big and small as well, so a travel guide is a good investment. And buying one would avoid the duplication of labor and off-topicism that people posting tourism tips on this language-learning community would entail.

Concerning your 2nd Q: I'm not sure if I get you correctly (cannot get what makes you trouble, to be honest,) but "adjective versions of city names" are widely used. A few examples: Санкт-Петербургский Государственный Университет, Нижегородский Государственный Университет (note that the adjective form of Нижний Новгород is нижегородский), Московский Государственный Университет, водка "Московская" etc.

Concerning more info on Нижний (note that you cannot shorten this city's name as Новгород, because this strictly refers to Великий Новгород - only as Нижний!), try local Livejournal communities - [livejournal.com profile] nnov, [livejournal.com profile] ru_nnov, [livejournal.com profile] ktosomnoj_nnov, [livejournal.com profile] outdoor_nnov, [livejournal.com profile] star_nn, [livejournal.com profile] nnovclubs, [livejournal.com profile] foto_nn, [livejournal.com profile] nnov_tusovka, and [livejournal.com profile] nnov_walks.

I spent 4 months last fall working in the American Center library at НГЛУ (LUNN). I loved the whole experience. All the people I met were nothing but nice, and I made a ton of friends. Also, I was in much the same position as you: going through school, going alone, not knowing what to expect, etc. If you have specific questions or whatnot you should email me (giantantattack@livejournal.com). I'd be more than happy to assuage any fears you might have. :-)

You're going to a great city!

Now that I think about it, that e-mail might not work. Use farside215 (at) mac (dot) com. With the necessary adjustments. ;-)
