What is the best word for 'gym', as in a place to exercise and lift weights? I've used the phrase "спортивный зал" before but I get the impression that this is not a very colloquial way to say it. Is there a better word?

тренажёрка - a very colloquial variant. A short one from ¨тренажерный зал¨

one more colloquial word (not for all gum but only for its weights section) - качалка - from the expression "качать мышцы"

Качалка. This word is most expressive.

Качалка is only for a place to lift weights :)

Yet, спортивный зал is better.
Спортзал is short from "спортивный зал" (it sounds more informal but not colloquial).
The other above-mentioned variants are not exact.

No real live person I know would say спортивный зал when talking to real live people.

Я уволился с работы,
Потому что я устал.
Я почти не пью вина,
Я хожу в спортивный зал...

IMHO the most colloquial is тренажерный зал

it´s not colloquial at all.

"a place to exercise and lift weights" is "место, где делают упражнения и поднимают веса". so its exactly "тренажерный зал"

I´m not saying the translation is wrong, I´m saying that it´s not colloquial. Nobody would use it in everyday speech, it´s too long.

тренажерный зал is semantic neutral, "тренажерка" is from teens speach i guess
