Hi, I am native russian speaker and one person asked me, if I can teach her some Russian from the very beginning. As you may guess, I have no idea what textbook one should use - so I hope you can tell me what would be the best choice? which textbook(s) you find the most logical and easy to understand? If possible, give full title so I can look up for it. Some matherials in electronic form are also appreciated!
Thanks in advance)

We are using начело (beginnings... I don't know if it's spelled correctly) and I am new to learning russian and I think this text book is extremely helpful.

Yes, начало is the title for a series of books for beginning Russian. I used them at my college, and they are alright. I've also heard that голоса is fairly popular.

I'm using Schaum's Russian Grammar. I find it pretty informative but it contains a lot of information in not very many pages. If you use it you should go slowly and give her a chance to practise what she's learned, as there aren't many exercises in the book. However, I do like that it gets straight into grammar instead of wasting time on useless things like numbers and days of the week (it eventually teaches these things, but not until chapter 6, and then it shows how to decline them and so on).

You could also give her some Russian music to listen to. I think it's hard to learn a language when you only ever see it in a textbook :)

I think that the Golosa series is at the top for beginning textbooks.
Golosa 1 & 2, (3-4th edition) by R. Robin, Evans-Romaine et al.

If your friend wants to speak and understand Russian I'd skip the text book and have them buy Pimsleur Russian on CD's. http://www.pimsleurdirect.com/s.nl/sc.12/category.308/.f

Prices are often discounted quite a bit elsewhere so search the web before you grab your credit card. However beware of low quality illegal copies sold on E-Bay.

Then buy a video IPod and copy the CD's to the IPod using Itunes. Don't mess with the book chips.

Pimsleur will teach you to speak and understand. Textbooks (at least at first) will be frustrating and useless.
