Dear Community,

I would be grateful if you could clarify an issue for me.

1. СамЫ дорогие вещи мира

2.  СамЫЕ дорогие вещи мира

Which one of the above is correct?

Google lists at least 292 000 instances of  "самЫ" and 53 800 000 instances of самЫЕ, so I'm inclined to view the former as non-standard.

Also, multitran lists "самЫ" as the short plural form of "сам" (Краткая форма множественного числа).

However, I think this should be "самИ". Is that correct?

Lastly, does "самЫ"  have any right to an independent existence, or is it just an error that keeps getting repeated?

UPDATE: 1. "СамЫ" is not standard Russian and its use is not recommended in Russian. 2. multitran.ru has been advised of their error.

I have never heard of "Самы" as a form of the word "сам" (and I am a native speaker). The only way one could account for so many cases of its existence on the web is that it's a very common typo. 'Самый' means 'the most ...'. "Сами" and "самый" are not related in any way, at least not in meaning (don't know anything about their origin)

As I understood, "Самы" is Belarussian word, not russian.

The word "самы" does not exist at all. Perhaps, it's just an arhaic form.

"Самый", "самые", "самая", etc. coupled with participles or adjectives mean "the most".
"СамЫЕ дорогие вещи мира" is correct for "the most expensive things of the world".

"Самый", "самые", "самая", etc. coupled with demonstrative pronouns mean "the very". For example, "Мы видим тот самый собор" means "We see that very cathedral".

"Сам" depending on the context, means "on his own", "without assistance".

When placed next to a name or a post of some big boss, the word "сам" accentuates the unexpectedness of the boss's participation in the event.
For example, "Сам Путин приехал поздравить юбиляра"

PS: There is a dialect form "самы" (<- "самые") in northern dialects that customary have intervocalic /й/ dropped, but that would rarely creep into written text unless you consciously write using dialect for stylistic purposes, e.g. failry tales. (c.f. Bairische Sprache vs. Hochdeutsch :).

There is no such word in Russian as "самы". It is Belorussian. 292 thousand vs. 53 million is approximately how much smaller is Belorussian Web sector than Russian.
I googled it up myself and found that even within those 292 thousand, most occurrences are just typos in Russian (or voluntary distortions, see "padonki language"). If you resrtict the Google search to Belorussian Web (the query would be "самы site:.by") you only find about 41 thousand occurrences.

That's the St. Petersburg University using the wrong form here. St. Petersburg is in Russia. So, obviously, it's not accurate to blame the whole confusion on Belorussia.

Also, someone should let multitran.ru know that they're propagating the wrong form.

Reminds me of a story from early 90s when searching for "мазут" in an in-house search system that a friend wrote for his employer returned hits for "мазь" because it analyzed the word as "маз-" + "-ут" (3p. pl.)

it´s an obvious misprint on the page you´re citing, and it´s no wonder coz the words used, лажовый first of all, is slang, slang and slang. The one who was typing it just didn't care to put it right. The word meant is самый, the just dropped the last letter by mistake.

One can only speculate as to why it is so, but it remains a fact that this error is in circulation and evidently enjoys some degree of popularity. I think the most egregious incident was the listing by multitran.ru of this as the standard form.

Anyway, I've sent off a message to multitran.ru on the issue and, hopefully, they will rectify the situation shortly.

From my end, the case is closed.

May be they have some script problems that make disapear the e at the end? There is no such a word in russian! Or may be there is a sort of fachion to change the words to make them sound funny.

«Самы» is simply Belorussian for «самый». They don't like putting й at the ends of their masculine adjectives.
