Dear community

I need to send a tech support question to a Russian colleague, but my Russian is pretty basic, and I certainly don't know any technical terms.

What is the word/phrase for "disk space" in Russian?

I think that "дисковое пространство" is a direct word-to-word translation of english term which is correct if you know what is it. "Объём диска" translation gives "russian" sence to that phrase which may be understood by more peoples that are not so technically educated.

While "дисковое пространство" is indeed a direct calque from English "disk space", it's still correct and widely used in Russian. It is more formal, but has an advantage of having significantly wider meaning, as it's applicable to ANY use of the words -- from HD size (a real and quite narrow meaning of "объём диска") through free space to OS disk quota -- which all has its distinctive names in Russian.

I think, You'd better give whole question you want to ask, because there are several analogues for that phrase. Most often you could say "пространство на диске" or "дисковое пространство".

I guess you'd better to send the question in English, without trying to translate it by yourself. When speaking about some specific technical problems, even people with the language knowledge much higher than basic but not informed about the actual use of words can make such mistakes that would made the whole text ambiguous if not senseless at all.
