hi again.
okay I am given the following statements and I have to try to determine what question was asked before the statement. I have given what I think was the appropriate question... can you comment if you think something is out of place... I am especially curious about the placement of 'ночью' in the last sentance. Should i put it in the beginning or the end of the sentance?

given:
1)Пётр и Вера Смирновы живут в Субири.
2)Сейчас они едут домой на поезде.
3)Это интересная книга.
4)Я ем суп и хлеб ночью.
5)Вера любит Ивана.
6)Слоны идут в зоопарк.

the questions i believed were asked:
1)Где Вера и Пётр Смирновы живут?
2)Куда они едут?
3)Что это?
4)Что вы едите ночью?
5)Кто Вера любит?
6)Куда Слоны идут?

Everything is fine, just the pronoun in #5 should be in accusative, because the person Vera loves is not acting, but acted upon. Vera is in nominative because she is the actor.
And the word order is not quite correct im several cases - normally the main questioning pronoun comes first, the verb second and then the rest. E.g. "Где живут Петр и Вера Смирновы?" However, "Куда они едут?" and "Что вы едите?" is correct. Note that the word order may change in some cases, e.g. if you have an opposition: "Куда вы едете? А куда едут они?" and "Куда они едут? А вы куда едете?" "Вы куда едете? А они куда едут?" is all correct. (Hope I have not finally confused you :-))

P.S. #4 is fine, and "ночью" should be in the end, indeed.

It may be in the beginning also. When it il in the end it means that it is in the night that you eat your soupe and bread. When you write it in the beginning it means that it is soupe and bread that you eats by night.

4. When referring to the time between 6-12 PM or so, Russians say "вечер" (noun), "вечером" (adverb). The words "ночь, ночью" are used for later time (say, 12-6 AM or so), when people usually sleep and don't eat. Therefore your phrase # 4 sounds rather odd.

1. "в Субири" has a typo; "в Сибири" is OK.
2. Your phrase #2 ends with "train", not "home". Perhaps the preceding question should be not "where", but "by what transport" -- "На чём они едут", or both: "Куда и на чём они едут?". That's because the rheme (the new information, not known before) usually gos at the end of the sentence. (Sometimes it may stand at the beginning; other positions are far less common.)

2. questionable. But I'm inclined to agree with miram, На чем они едут домой? That is by what means they are going home.
3. variable. You can just as well place the question mark after the initial sentence and get "Is this an interesting book?". Это интересная книга?
4. ok.
5. in Russian it's not Who, it's Whom. Кого любит Вера?
6. again, word order. Куда идут слоны? And make sure you don't capitalize the elefants. It's not German :)))

Regarding the word order issue: the stressed word in a Russian sentence is the one that comes last. Don't remember it as "the verb comes last" or "the subject comes last" in a question. Because as oryx&crake said, "Где Вера и Пётр Смирновы живут?" could be correct if you were trying to say "Where in the hell do those guys live, anyway?". (Sidenote, in case you're interested: The particle же would be used as the equivalent to "in the hell" I believe, like "Где же...". The main difference is that in English there's no non-vulgar equivalent of же, it's always "(where) the f***" or "(where) in frig")
