I've always wondered if the Russians had any games on the internet like Runescape, or video games like Diablo or Unreal Tournament - Something fun and interactive. Does anyone know of any russian video games? I've never heard of any, so it's always remained a question for me.

Well, all MMORPG's and major Multiplayer games are exactly the same as everywhere - WoW, Lineage, whatever.

The only significant Russian game I can think of is "Il-2", an airsim series (a lot of add-ons), really good one. Probably one could add The Disciples, and some Russian-developed, but European-distributed games.

You can try Pentacore (http://www.pentacore.ru/). It is a browser-based MMORPG, quite original and very well done. It is completely in Russian, and after some time you'll need to communicate with other players, which will be good for your Russian ;) The first two weeks are free, and it's around 5$/month after that (since it's no big deal, you can just ask a Russian friend to pay for you if they still don't accept credit cards).

There are no FPSs or Diablo clones in Russian - unless you consider buying a translation.

And I could recall...

The are lot of Russian games. Only some of the were written for the foreign market sales.
You can count "The Etherlords", "Silent Storm", "Evil Islands" and the latest "Heroes of Might & Magic V". They all were developed by Russian company Nival Interactive.
As far as online games are concerned, I would suggest you to check out the "TimeZero" project.

Yep, it's free. At least it was when I logged in "TimeZero" last time (this Spring).
But you can boost up your character, buing ingame credits for real money and then buing weapons and equipment.
I found that 10$ is quite enough for the good start.
But you can earn ingame credits right in game - mostly by harvesting resources.
Feel free to ask for clarification of any questions.

It seems that there were some games based on stories about Штирлиц and Чапаев.

What I liked about APEHA was that you didn't have to scan all the lines of text for someone talking to you; if someone's addressing you, they have to write "to [person]" first. Which is done automatically when you click on someone's name.

As for the game itself, yeah, I couldn't make heads nor tails of anything that was going on. I was more interested in reading a live conversation between Russians and being able to get instant feedback on how awful my Russian is.

Some of the first-person shooter games look like a lot of fun, but I know that if I was leafing through a dictionary (while talking to Russians who want to play and not talk) then I'd be fragged 30 times per word.

None so far. I was also troubled by the fact that the screenshots for all of them contained no words, since FPSs aren't nearly as text-heavy as RPGs. But if you find a MMO one (whose tagline isn't "Welcome to Communism!"), tell me so I can try it out.

I might have tried Evercrack II but I've lost too many friends to it.

Only two слова that I can remember offhand: <<шмот>> and <<заметно>>. I didn't play for very long though.

Shmot is your clothing/armor, "Zametno" means "(It's) noticeable. (that you don't speak russian)"
