Russian grammar textbook

Hi,

A friend of mine is trying to start studying the Russian language and is looking for a good textbook with Russian grammar. Is there any good textbooks that might be helpful for a beginner?

I looked at Amazon, the book has a good feedback. Have you used Workbook along with the textbook? What about the audio CD that accompanies Nachalo Book 1? Have you studied with a teacher or on your own?

That's the series used here where I go to school (University of Michigan). We were forced to buy the workbook and the audio CD (for book 1 and 2). The workbook is a MUST, but I didn't find the audio CD too helpful. It's kind of poor quality, and the people don't speak very clearly. But then again if you go to Russia people probably won't be speaking... like... this... to... you... Ya know? So, use your best judgment as to what will be most helpful to you: something to listen to or nothing to listen to. Also, there's a website for the first book that has like practice stuff on it and quizzes and other things. The website is:

I'm studying at uni not on my own, but the program here at Florida State uses Голоса (and it has a nifty site, too (google: golosa. It's housed on George Washington University's servers.)

I found "Puti" to be helpful for second-year type material, but I think we used "Nachalo" and "Live From Moscow."
