If I want to say on July 1, 2006, I would write the following: в 1. Июля 2006 года right? (I have no grammar book here and I need to know this...)

Just Первого/1-го, without в.

just 1 июля 2006 года
if it is written "1 July, 2006" withoгt "on", then 1(первое) июля 2006 года

It is not 1-ого, it is 1-го, according to the rules.

And finally, if we're to obey the rules, there's no need to write this ending at all, just 1 июля.

Well, you may be right (I am not 100% sure), but anyway it is way better to write "1-го" than "1-ого". You won;t believe me - I have even seen horrible monsters like "4-ыре" and "5ять".

He is right: all those -го, -е etc. are now normally omitted in most texts. I teach journalism at Moscow State, and we instruct the students to omit those endings completely, though they keep on using all those weird "23-его", "17-ого" and even "22-рого" :))

Maybe you'll give us the whole phrase? It can depends on context.

Yes, this is correct. Sometimes they write: "1" июля 2006. (day is in quotes). But I never saw "1-го" in official documents.
