Has anyone here done any academic summer study abroad programs in Russia? I'm looking specifically at AIFS & the SUNY programs, but any suggestions are welcome. I'm thinking of going next summer & would like to study in either Moscow or Pete. The cheaper the better & the longer the better, any time between May & August is great. Any input?

I was looking at this same program (from SUNY) to Russia... if you do go, please be sure to post how your experience went.

I know it's not specifically what you asked, but...

I spent the fall semester of 1993 in Moscow thru SUNY Albany, we were at MGU then. I would imagine it hasn't changed since then. Granted, when I was there I got to experience both an uprising by the parliament and the coldest November since WW2, but it was definitely an awesome experience. I would go back in an instant if I could. From an academic standpoint...I feel very certain that I learned more Russian in those 4 months than I did in 2 years at Oswego and 2 years in high school. Sadly, I seem to have lost a large amount of it since then.

I was one of the lucky folks to do the AIFS program a year ago. If you go with them, you'll likely learn a lot (unless you purposely avoid Russian speakers which is entirely possible). If you go with them, my advice is to take the homestay.

If you'd like, I can send you an e-mail about it. I'm not terribly sure I feel like writing an essay in a comment about it. Or if you have AOL IM, get in touch with me that way.

Dunno about individual colleges in the states, but I just did a summer program at RGGU which is usually open to groups of students; and I also know that MGU has programs for individuals.

RGGU = RSUH in English, BTW. No Russian keyboard here, damn me.
