Happy victory day! A few questions regarding it: Are there any standard phrases that you would say to an army veteran on victory day? Would it be different if they fought in WW2 versus were just in the army? Is there any victory day toast? Finally, I've seen 'The Cranes are Flying' and 'Come and See', what are other recommended movies about WW2 in Russian? Thanks all.

No, there is no too specific phrases, something like

С праздником Победы!
С Днем Победы!

no matter whether a person really fought or not.

Re. some movies - there are a lot of them, e.g.

standard congratulation phrase would be "С Днём Победы!".
standard toast would be "За Победу!".

as for the movies, there's "А зори здесь тихие".

:) usually we say just THANK YOU, it's also possible to wish health, and all the rest depends only on your imagination :) No, as for me, i think they should be a part of this war in some way, like "children of the war", etc. About the toast - just the same as with wishes. The film i would strongly recommend is "В бой идут одни старики" - may be some other translate the name as i can't find any adequate word for "старики".

С Днем Победы!

"Семнадцать мгновений весны" (12 series, but everyone in the ex-Soviet Union knows it by heart).

I think there were 13 series in it?

I think there were 12, but I could be mistaken.
Does it matter?

С Днем Победы!

I'm in love with this movie for a long long time - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068161/. Eventhough it sounds strange for a 26-years old guy, but that movie took a part of my heart forever.

С Днём Победы всех.

Now we have veterans of 3 wars: Great Patriotic War, war in Afganistan and two wars in Chechn'a. Today is the holiday of veterans of Great Patriotic War. Also there is "the day of defender of motherland", 23'th Feburuary. That's the day wnen everyone who was in army are congratulated.

About movies: "А зори здесь тихие". That's a great movie.

Agree

IMHO the best movie about the war is "Они сражались за Родину", screenplay by Sholokhov, the Nobel prizewinner

No a film about The Great Patriotic War per se, but a great film nonetheless.

My personal favourite too and another one with unforgettable songs! Not only "Молдаванка" but also "Hiч яка мiсячна", a touching ukranian love ballad. There's an episode in the film where the lyrics goes like "My love, cold night dew won't touch your bare feet/ I'll carry you home in my arms" and they show archive footage of young girls carring injured soldiers from the battlefield. I always choke with tears during that moment.

And by the way, there are good post-soviet WW2 movies too! I recommend В августе 44го (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0284595/). Great detective story and new promising russian actors at their best.

Toast: "За Победу!" (Za pobedu) (and always smb. will correct you: "За нашу Победу!")

I recommend modern films:

Zvezda (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0326450/)
V avguste 44-go (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0284595/)

Try to find also the film "Горячий снег", and there's also a book by Bondarev! It's really very realistic, my granddad told me it was his true story and a true story of many other guys of that time!

I did not find in this topic any information regarding the most popular song about this day - "День Победы" (http://sputnik.mto.ru/Seans/Docs_54/pesnya/pesnya/5pesn/den_pobedy.htm). It is worth to be heard, if you still had not do this ever.
