Are Комсомольская правда or Российская газета considered yellow journalism?

EDIT: Other than Vedomosti, what are considered the most respectable national newspapers/monthlies? (I'm not looking for a political discussion, just well-written press)

РГ под одну гребенку с КП не стоило, конечно, стричь, но КР - это такая желтизна, что просто ни в какие ворота. Чего стоит только статья про нагрев яиц телефонами

Российская газета is the newspaper of the government and fresh laws are posted there.
Ведомости is respectable. Коммерсант too.

Isn't "Коммерсант" too concentrated on economics? I got an impression that [livejournal.com profile] joliecanard needs more general papers.

Kommersant and Vedomosti are political newspapers, too.
Izvestia is Gazprom-Media's newspaper. It has famous columnists and nothing more.

I've mentioned Izvestia's drift to the yellowish side. But couple of years before it was quite a decent general paper.

Коммераснтъ got enough stuff not on economics.

Don't listen to them. While "Комсомольская правда" and "Московский комсомолец" are indeed naton-wide tabloids, "Российская газета" is an official newspaper of Russian Government, and publicizes various decrees. It is also an official publisher of laws -- no law could be put in acting unless it was published there.
As for good journalism -- well, until recent changes "Известия" was a pretty decent one, but now they are quickly falling into same yellowish mass. Many argue thet it's due to political pressure, but from words of Maxim Sokolov (that's the truly great journalist, BTW) who works there as a columnist, I gotthe impression that it was just a commercial move.
If you're looking for something like NewYorker or Village Voice, you can drop your hopes. "Новый очевидец" was an attempt to imitate NewYorker, but it was a commercial disaster and no one tried to start something like that ever since. There is very interesting English alternative rag called "The Exile", run by some american expats -- sometimes extremely witty, sometimes downright vulgar, but always terrifyngly acerbic, sarcastic and funny, but I'm not sure if you would be interested in it.

Well, Kommersant and Vedomosi were already mentioned here, and Izvestia is still quite respectable -- not trash, definitely. Actually, until recently, Izvestia was exactly what you're asking, so you may look it now with some hope. ;) But that's it. I really coulnd't name any more general papers that didn't go into "trash" category on the spot.

Известия, Коммерсант are probably the only seriuos thick newspapers in the country. But do you really need more?

If you consider magazines it can be more interesting: weekly Власть and Деньги (thin magazines from the Коммерсант publishers) are well-written, full of interesting info and not yellow at all (though Деньги have some graphs, stats and other financial crap).
Афиша is a pretty nice-written entertainment magazine, as well as a number of 'converted' (Esquire, GQ, et c.) which have both translated from english and original articles.

I don`t think Известия is still serious, I mean the changes that took place there.

Hell yeah, "Комсомольская правда" is even more yellow than #FFFF00.

Gee... is it absolutely impossible to make up a new joke in this world? Man, I'm so disappointed in myself...

I just wanted to note that Коммерсантъ is in fact, a solid paper and give you a rough US/Euro equivalent. It's very similar to the Wall Street Journal, which is to say, very respectable news/features, even if the overall focus IS business.

Oh, and what about АиФ? It's a weekly, and does seem to delve somewhat into the trashy side of Russia, but it's also pretty famous. But then, I guess Pravda is too...

You can also try Спорт-Экспресс. It's about sports of course, but it's quite good and they publish all their issues on their website each day: http://www.sport-express.ru/np/

I like argumenti i fakti (www.aif.ru). I don't know about 'yellow journalism' but it always seems well written, has diverse topics and isn't too pro-government.

But sometimes АиФ is very populistic... I don't like Kostikov's texts - he is a graphomaniac.

I don't know who Kostikov is and I can only give a foreign learner's perspective. From that point of view, it isn't too full of jargon that it's unreadable but on the other hand it still deals with fairly serious topics and isn't as simplistic or tabloid-like as some Murdoch-inspired rag like zhizn' (I think it was called that anyway).

I have graduated from the Moscow State University's faculty of journalism in 2002 and I can say that the newspaper which has always been respected mostly (by the teaching stuff of MSU at least) and to which we have always been referred to, as far as it seemed to me, was Izvestia. Perphaps it's been regarded the best among the similar ones.

Время Новостей (www.newstime.ru) is mostly OK. Но корректор им таки нужен ;(
