[identity profile] clownshoes.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] learn_russian
I'm a first-year Russian student and am grasping all of the grammar perfectly, missing little to no points on tests, and any mistakes are usually careless errors. On the other hand, the actual vocabulary is KILLING me. Example: on my midterm, I would have had an A if I had known all of the vocabulary for the translation portion; instead, I got a D. I've tried various studying methods, and none seem to be working for me.

And thus, the question for the community:
What methods for studying Russian have you guys tried that have worked especially well?

I'm a Russian native, but I can tell you that nothing was as effective for me while learning English in terms of vocabulary retaining as reading. Just pick a topic that really interests you (I, fortunately, have a penchant for rather easily digested books like Star Wars). By the time you read, say, fifth or sixth book I can guarantee your vocabulary will inctease greatly. :)

Unfortunately, there is no miraclously easy way to do it. You have to work on it for some time.

+1
Read, read, READ!
Works for me: Make a list of unknown words from your book and return to each word when you see it again and make a note (a cross or a point). When you make a note more than seven times - make a card. But normally you'll never need it!

speaking of which, are there any russian translations of the starwars novels?

I've looked but been rather unsuccessful.

Yes, there are. Actually, I read them first in Russian, then in English. And it took me some time to adjust to Kyp Durron and Luke Skywalker in English transcription. :) I think you can find some on the Net, if not... dunno, try to order them at www.ozon.com. (sigh) I left mine in Kiev, unfortunately, but i can ask my mom, who's coming here in a month, to see if they are still in my old flat there, and if they are, I can ask her to bring them. No NJO there, though, but I had Trawn trilogy and JAT and Corellian trilogy for sure.

I am not a fan of the novels (I've only seen the movies) so I am not sure if those are ones you need:

I don't know if my comment with links is of any use. If it's not the case, you can erase this as well.

The very first line in google on Звездные Войны книги gave me this - http://www.swgalaxy.ru/books/ I think they all are there.

You know, I opened a chapter from Jedi search... feels so freaking weird now to read it in Russian. Кип Даррон... jeeeez, it has been years since I saw this name like that. :)

Good luck. :)

flash cards and foldovers. repetition is mindnumbing, but I don't know any other way that really works. when you get further along, if you make a point of learning to recognize roots, that helps a lot, but when I was first studying russian, it was mostly just brute force memorization.

also- good luck! it will get easier, I promise.

Is there any particular vocab you can't remember? Maybe it's words you never use... so if you could find ways to use that vocab (meeting after class with another student, for example), it might help.

Also, when you do the "household items" unit, tape a card with the russian name to the object. You know... put "OKHO" on the windows. I've never done it with russian, but the tennents before us did that with German, and I can say read the words "window" and "alarm clock" now. :c)

mb try reading simple russian books or watch movies with russian subtitles (there's no problem as in the internet there are lots of them).
In fact I'm russian, but caт recommend you the thing, which used to help me when I started with my English: you make paper cards, write words on the one side and their symbols on the other. So you lay the pack of such cards upon a table and try to guess words :) simple and effective way

I recommend Interlex (http://www.vocab.co.uk/). If you want to try the traditional "flash card" method once more (or for the first time), this program makes it more efficient. However, if you don't want to equate Russian words with their English equivalents too strongly, then this is probably not a good choice.

I can relate... I don't think it's you though, or your studying... I think it's Russian! I can never remember half the words because they're all too long. :P I haven't had nearly this much trouble with Spanish (okay that doesn't count really) or Persian.

where did you learn persian?

I'm looking for schools/tutors... anything.

Haven't learned it yet per se, but I'm studying some at Maryland... they're also starting a flagship program you should look at if you've taken a decent amount of Persian. Here (http://www.languages.umd.edu/persian/) is the department website... poke around there and you'll find anything you want. :)

i speak no persian at the moment, but am extremely interested in learning it.

Awesome... I totally recommend it, it's a thousand times easier than Russian and a pretty cool language, lots of fun.

Russian is, I'm guessing, your second language? Have you studied anything else?

And may I add you to my friends? :)

yes, russian is my second language.... i'll have been studying it for four years in september 2006.
I've lived in russia for a while, and really love the language

I'm glad to know that farsi is easier than russian.
I never found russian to be very hard until i came to learning how to speak colloquially. At this point it's just practice practice practice for me.

sure you can add me....

when i have a huge block of vocabulary that I need to learn, i would write everything out, repeatedly, cycling words in and out, while saying them outloud and their meanings.

I also try to use them as much as possible, even if i end up saying something that is kind of rediculous.

Do you do your homework, and then forget about russian until your next class?
Use it everywhere if you can, find native speakers to talk with, read the news online....
I've found that the longer i've been speaking, the easier it is for me to pick up new vocabulary... and even if i memorize something and forget it, if i see it again a few months or weeks down the line, then it's easier for me to pick up the second time.

good luck!

it's always possible to listen to the music and try to sing. You'll have to repeat words so you may use and learn them.

if you do that, make sure you have the lyrics printed out... because in songs, regardless of the language, sometimes the actual words get muddled.

Rote.

The best way to learn vocabulary is to write the word over and over again. When I'm learning new vocabulary, I write each word 10 times.

I can not emphasize enough how wildly effective this technique has been for me.

You can also start reading Russian LJs, but that can be challenging, since they are generally full of slang and rather nonconventional vocabulary. :)

Mnemonics work wonders.

See the word, and imagine the first thing comming to mind about it (the more striking the better), and imagine sticking a label on it, or the object/person in question saying the word aloud. Repeating the image over in your mind also reenforces.
