I should already know this since I've studied Russian for a few months but I'm still not sure of the genitive case. Will someone look these over to see if they are correct?

У меня (есть) + item = I have ___. (ex. У меня брат. = I have a brother.)
У меня нет + gen. = I do not have ___. (ex. У меня нет машины. = I don't have a car.)
У меня будет + item = I will have ___ . (ex. У меня будет машина = I will have a car.)
У меня не будет + gen. = I will not have ___. (ex. У меня не будет машины. I won't have a car.)
У меня был/а/о/и + item = I had ___. (ex. У меня был карандаш/была книга/было радио/были книги. = I had a pencil/book/radio/books.)
У меня не было + gen. = I did not have ___. (ex. У меня не было компютера.)

In fact, you CAN use "есть" in this particular case, and that even sounds better: у меня есть брат. Your version where есть is omitted is not a mistake, though, it is correct grammatically.

Oh, and У меня есть брат is generally better. It's a bit hard to describe when you should omit есть. I think it's when you have something like a condition, or a thing you can use here and now. Here are some examples:

у меня ангина
у меня машина (here and now)

but

у меня есть машина (in general)

as my textbook and professor explains, the "есть" is removed when the context is already understood that you have the object; i.e.

you could say I have an older brother without the "есть" because you're stating that he's older, a quality about him. I have a cat would require the "есть", but I have a NEW cat, would not require it (although, personally, it looks better to me...I dunno, I'm non-native).

I hope that makes sense; I'm still trying to figure out the Russian keyboard layout.

Hm, doesn't make any sence at all. If you introduce the fact that you have something, then you use есть. If you answer a question or continue some topic, you omit есть.

- У меня есть сестра.
- А у меня - брат.

- У тебя есть брат или сестра?
- У меня - брат.

- Почему ты не был на работе?
- У меня ангина.

If there is some sort of descriptive quality, you omit есть. That's how I've learned it.

Keep in mind that in your last example, the stress goes on "не," so У меня не было _______.
