[identity profile] blinkenlight.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] learn_russian
This page is called a test of the Russian language. Actually, not of the language, but of knowlege of certain well-known proverbs and quotes from books, films, etc.

Many native speakers find it very funny, some other native speakers find that they can't pass it. The rules are rather strict: two wrong answers, and you fail.

Sorry if it's a bayan (something already posted here). If so, feel free to delete it.

Please note that the working language of this community is English. Transliterated Russian does not count as English. Thank you.

You are so obnoxious with posting these warnings multiple times in every thread that I think I'm going to unsubscribe from the group.

Most language educators agree that full immersion is an excellent way of teaching a language. As a result, people should not be chided for failing to give an English translation.

I know a lot of native Russian speakers who have problems reading "translit", and I suppose that for non-natives it is even more useless.

I have not created the rules of this community, but I am here to make sure that people follow them. There are lots of communities with different sets of rules - pelase feel free to move there.

I agree that full immersion is an excellent way of teaching a language. But in this case I don't think it counts (especially translit). Also, there are rules to be followed.

Also if there are tules to be followed this community is called "learn russian", so I suppose that it is ok that someone writes in Russian here. Well, I am a user of italian community and we do write there in both languages: italian and english. I don't see any problem. I think it would be much more useful to write only in russian in this community just to help the learners of this difficult language.

Please take care to read the community rules before you join a community. Once again, I did not create the rules but I am here to ensure people follow them. There are many members of the community who just started learning Russian and they will be unable to benefit from any of your comments unless you make them in a language they understand. If you want to provide a comment in Russian, feel free to do so, but according to this community's rules you should provide an English translation along with it.

It's a great test, thanks for the link!

I've done it all very quickly and almost effortless, but for a language learner it would be a very nice exercise.

That's test for people of my generation (I was born in late 70s), but I suppose many native speakers of next generation will not pas it simply because for them all this is part of history, not part of life (or childhood memories).
Actually I've had a lot of fun answering the questions, wrong variants are really more straight to the point sometimes :-)

No mistakes, the choices are really simple. The alternatives are very funny, and some of them are also semicanonical, in fact :)

Could anyone give an example of how this test is funny, or would it be destroyed in translation? Every native speaker I know finds this test highly amusing and I, having only just started to study the language, am lost!

It's based on popular sayings and quotes from popular movies that every native speaker of a certain age knows and non-native speaker probably would not. To the latter, the comical effect would be non-existent.

It is not actually a language test - it is a test on Russian culture of a certain period (around 70s or 80s). So you should not be upset you don't understand it, because even native speakers, if they are younger than, say, 25, will probably have difficulties with it.

I wonder... do really exist Russian native-speakers who failed the test???

OMG, what happens to us!
