I'm a little clear on how names are modified in the genitive case.

male name ending in consonant = change the ending to "a"
male name ending in soft sound = change the ending to "я"
male name ending in a or я = ???

female name ending in a = change the endning to "ы"
female name ending in я = change the ending to "и"
female name ending in anything else = no change

example of where I am confused:

Сергей = ?

female name ending in anything else = no change - wrong

Любовь - Любови

(note that if it's about Love - the same in nominative but different in genitive:
любовь - любви)

How timely. I was discussing this with a classmate just yesterday.

I ♥ the genitive case.

"й" is а "soft consonant" here, so just apply the rule from the second line, and get "Сергея".

> male name ending in a or я = ???

Declines as if it were female.
