So, my last post made me wonder: what is good contemporary music? The dance/pop stuff is junky & I love it, but it's not what I typically listen to. Usually I listen to "indie rock." What's the Russian equivalent? Any .mp3s you guys can throw at me?

ETA: To give you an idea of what I listen to, see my Last.FM profile.

For starters

If you like indie, try "Nebo zdes". It's pretty unusual, but may be you'll like'em)
That's for example:

If you like'em, here are two their last CD's, wich, IMHO, are the best:

Well, there is a lot of 80-x and 90-x russian rock that people listen to, it's considered peak. Bands: Кино, Nautilus Pompilius, Аквариум, ДДТ, Алиса. There are much more, they're less known but still very good. Most of them are either defunct or degraded for now, but their old records are listened to and loved. Records are avaliable widely in internet, I can look for links.

While we haven't got a big and developed indie scene, but, for example, russian folk/fantasy music gains momentum as an indie musical style. For that I can give you some URLs if you're interested...

I'm also more of an "indie rock" fan.

My boyfriend has some Nautilus Pompilius. I don't much care for them...
I like Аквариум, but I have a CD of Boris Grebenshikov on his own that I absolutely love.
My boyfriend also has a CD of ДДТ...
I can't rememeber the names of the bands he usually listens to, but they're definitely more "indie rock" or new Russian folk style.

You have to listen to "B.G. and deadushki" (БГ и deadушки ).

Tequilajazz is more modern, than rest of. There is some demo tracks at http://www.tequilajazzz.spb.ru/

Read zvuki.ru

But I doubt if a foreigner can understand the lyrics and if one can enjoy these songs without understandig them.

Try this:

5nizza is really cool, though not too easy to understand for non-native Russian speaker.

I'd also suggest Paperniy T.A.M.

I think 5nizza is completley russian slang players, so non-natives will not have mutch fun.

I would say Морэ&Рэльсы is as close as it gets.

Check out their main song - http://shulya.nm.ru/MORE%20AND.rar
And if you like it - some more on http://morelsy.nm.ru/sound.htm

From the recommendations above you will hardly find anything like indie, and while some bands are good (Auktyon, for example) one need an extreme language skill to understand their lyrics.

Ok. There is nothing here even half as good as what you named (my opinion).
More&Relsy are more like what they do in Britain now (Libertines, Arctic Monkeys I'd say).

Try Auktyon (see first comment), then we can see, ;)

Looked into your Last.fm, would add Ундервуд to my recommendations.

http://www.undervud.ru/av/mp3/2/vahteri.zip - to start with.

Also, try surfing Lats.fm - I mean Russians who listen to the same American music as you, must listen to some good Russian stuff.

Try me - http://www.last.fm/user/Gigazz/ ;)

More and Relsy (Sea and Rails) - the song is named the same as the band is.

Here is another: TT-34

Slight difference from indie rock ;)

http://www.tt34.com/index.php

Links on the page lead to audio and video for the group. Sorry, no english.

Russian contemporary music now includes a lot of electronic and club music. Psychodelic trance, drum and base, gabba/hardcore, house and techno.

Russian d'n'b and psy trance musicians are exteremely popular in Europe right now. Specifically psy trance and Israeli crowd.

If needed, I can produce some samples.

My favourite musik of this kind is Последние Танки в Париже
http://nehardcore.narod.ru/
But I think it is not easy for non-native speaker (and listener:)to understand their really cool texts.
Enjoy!
