I'm trying to decide where I should go next summer for language study in Russia, and I have it more or less narrowed down to the Smolny program (which I have already done) and the CIE program in Moscow.  I'm already familiar with the Smolny program, so if anyone has done CIE, I'd love to hear their thoughts.  I want to be in Moscow, but I may end up going back to St. Petersburg just to save money.

Also, a question completely unrelated to language study.... I will be coming to Russia from Czech Republic (I'm doing a two-month internship there before I go to Russia).  Is this going to affect my visa arrangements?  Can I still apply for my visa in Canada before I go to Prague, or would I have to do it there?

It may be wrong about Canada, but usually you can make visa for entering another country in your own country or in a third country without any problem. That is, you can make russian visa in Canada before going to Prague, or in Prague, but in your own country it's usually easier. Anyway the best place you can ask at is the nearest russian embassy/consulate.

In principal, you can get your visa in Canada before leaving for Prague. But we all know what that means. Especially when it comes to Smolny and their invitations. ;)
My advice - start getting a move on things now.

Danielle, I had a question specifically for you... I'm under the impression that the Shevchenko residence is better than the one on Korablestroiteley... is this true? And is it possible for me to stay there if I'm an independent student?

Shevchenko 25/1 (obshch. #4) is the best there is, yes. Just be careful - there is another Shevchenko...and that is the pits.

Define independent student.

I think that all Smolny students get Shevchenko 25/1 spaces.
