I was trying to make an example of the enormous quantity of Russian diminutives that can be made from any given name and only managed to come up with about 3 for each one, so for all you native speakers out there -

How many diminutives can be made from Елизавета?

It's got several syllables so it should be a good one! We can get about 11 diminutives from the english variant...
Спасибо!!

I think it isn't the best example... Let's try: Лиза, Лизочка, Лизонька, and maybe some joking, "family" variants - Лизок, Лизуня, Лизунчик (don't try to use them ;) )
Take Александра as an example! Аля, Саша, Шура, Саня, and accordingly - Алечка, Аленька, Алюшка, Алька, Сашенька, Сашечка, Сашунечка, Сашка, Шурочка, Шурка, Санечка, Санюшка, Санька...

Btw, tell me about 11 forms of Elizabeth, please!

Liz, Lizzy, Beth, Betsy, Eliza, Liza, Betty, and maybe some spelling variants (Lisy, for example) are the only ones I can think of. I don't know how to bring it up to eleven.

No Betties indeed?! Hm!
And Ella is a form of Elizabeth? I thought it's an independent name (Ella Fitzgerald i.e.)

don't forget Bess(ie)! it's such a nice old-fashioned one that only goes to horses these days, but it is sweet.

How could one forget Good Queen Bess?! ^_^ Yep, it's really oldfashioned, from the times of Good Old England, before they've buttoned up to their necks in Victorian times...

I think Bethany is an independent name, from a biblical place.

Studying Russian is exciting for a person named Alexandra (read: me).

> Аля, Алечка, Аленька, Алюшка, Алька

All those are usually reserved for Алла, not Александра

Well, there are no strict rules.
I tell you about the "norm" here, however elusive it may be.

Btw, I know one Sergei who is called John by the friends.

I know more than one Sergei who is called Gray by the friends: Сергей -> Серый (usual street nickname for any Sergei) -> Gray.

I'd rather say for Алина or Альбина.

Also true.
Definitely not for Александра, though.

there are also things like lizabeth, lizbet, ilsabet

Russian diminutives don't always work the way they do in English. For example, "Elizabeth" in English can be Beth and Liz, that is, different diminutives frm different parts of the name. In Russian, Елизавета wouldn't be Еля or Вета (unless she really wants to:)). All the diminutives would be formed from Лиза by adding different suffixes: Лизонька, Лизочка, Лизушка, Лизок, Лизочек, etc...
