Can someone take a look over my translations and tell me if I'm getting it right? We are supposed to be practicing genitive negation and numerals. Thanks!


1. Did the Russians build factories in the Urals? They didn't build any factories there.
Русские построили заводы в Уралах? Нет, они не построили никаких заводов там.

2. Did the soldiers see the fires? No...
Солдаты видели огни? Нет, они не видели никаких огней.

3. Did the president praise the heroes? No...
Президент хвалил героев? Нет, он не хвалил никаких героев.

4. Did the committee finish all its business? No...
Комитет закончил весь дел? Нет, он не закончил никаких дел.

5. Did they sell the fields? No...

Какие здания они ом-ремонтировали? Они не от-ремонтировали никаких здании.

7. What lands did the travellers see during their journey? No...

8. Which birds did you see in the woods today? It's strange, but I didn't see any birds in the woods today.
Какие птицы вы видели в лесу сегодня? Странно, но я не видела никаких птицев в лесу сегодня.

9. Did the salesperson buy new scales? No, he didn't buy new scales.
Продавец купил новые весы? Нет, он не купил новых весов.

10. Find the perfume! I'm not going to look for perfume right away.
Найдите духи! Я не стану найти никаких духов тотчас.

11. Did your father lose his glasses? My father doesn't have glasses.
Ваш отец потерял свои очки? У него нет очков.

12. Is there yeast in the fridge? There's no yeast here.

11. Eight hundred and sixty three minus thirty is eight hundred and thirty-three.
От восмисот шестидесяти трех отнять тридцати будет восемьсот тридцать три.

Urals has no plurals in Russian, easy to remember :) Урал is strictly singular, and it's a mountain region; any mountain region which name has no plural form in Russian, requires на instead of в: на Урале (also: на Кавказе, на Алтае, на Памире, на Тянь-Шане - BUT plural forms require в: в Гималаях, в Карпатах, в Кордильерах, в Скалистых горах, в Альпах, в Пиринеях; the only exception that comes to my mind right now is на Балканах, probably because Балканы is a wider area than just mountains.)

I would write: Русские строили заводы на Урале? OR: Строили ли русские заводы на Урале? Нет, они не построили там ни одного завода. OR: Нет, они не строили там заводов.

Better: За свою жизнь он любил только одну девушку (двух девушек, трех девушек). Girl - девушка, woman - женщина.

Наша библиотека купила тысячу/две тысяча/десять тысяча две тысячи/десять тысяч книг.

11. Eight hundred and sixty three minus thirty is eight hundred and thirty-three.
От восЬмисот шестидесяти трех отнять тридцатЬ - будет восемьсот тридцать три.

Better though: "Строили ли русские заводы на Урале?"

Only "на Урале" (in the Ural Region), not "в Уральских горах" (somewhere in the Ural mountains - and even in that meaning the Russian phrase is not entirely correct).

And what is "No..."? This kind of questions doesn't allow yes/no answer.

Basically, here we have spread all-over mistakes of two kinds:
1. No "ли" in questions.
2. Perfect verb forms vs. imperfect.

And some others, of course :)

It look like a good example of the text written by a non-Russian native speaking scholar.

My professor isn't Russian, but in his defense, it was an exercise designed to make us practice vocabulary from our textbook and the use of genitive negation, so rearranging the questions to sound "more Russian" isn't the point.

I put the "No..." in there myself to indicate that the answer had to be in the negative, not that it needed to be a Yes/No answer. That was perhaps a bit misleading.

So what's the point here?
I do not think answering wrongly worded questions would give you opportunity to make answers right.

What was your job here? Just writing the answers in Russian, or translating questions and writing your answers?

не закончил все дела (some are unfinished) ИЛИ не закончил ни одного дела (all are unfinished)

Какие здания они отремонтировали? Они не отремонтировали ни одного здания (they were supposed to, but didn't) ИЛИ: Они не ремонтировали здания (but probably fixed up bridges or roads).

Каких птиц вы видели сегодня в лесу? Странно, но сегодня в лесу я не видела никаких птиц. ИЛИ: ... я не видела никаких птиц сегодня в лесу.
