Yes, we (other Russian learners) found out it's hard. But look - we're sticking with it! You can definitely learn it - just don't stress out over things. Get a good foundation with the fundamentals - learn the alphabet, learn how the case system works, learn common words, learn basic grammar (in my opinion, many parts of grammar are so much easier in Russian than in English because word order doesn't have specific rules!), and practice using those things. If you hear a song you like, translate the lyrics, and as you listen to the song repeatedly, the Russian words become internalized. It might seem like slow-going at first, but that's good - slow and steady wins the race (plus you remember everything better if you don't rush!). You are at a great advantage - you LIVE in Russia! Get out as much as you can, watch the news, completely immerse yourself in Russian. Try not to let yourself speak English unless you are speaking with family and friends in the States, and try to limit even that. Try to make friends in Moscow.

*********YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!*******

My Russian teacher in high school always told us that Romance languages were harder to learn than Russian, and since then, I can confirm that. Russian is the only language I've studied that becomes easier as you go. Once you learn the alphabet, you see that reading is phonetic. The cases are a bear, but once you learn that and the basic verb system you're good to go. There are a lot of roots, and they repeat over and over again.

One of my classmates this past semester said that Russian is the only language you can teach to a computer, because it's so logical.

So, take heart. Russian is a beautiful language in it's simplicity. Some day soon, you'll have an "ah-ha" moment, when you achieve a deeper understanding of the way it works, and it will become easier for you.

well... russian-speaking people in Israel say the same about Hebrew ;)
I think it's because the language you learn is so different from your mother tongue that you must use logic instead of intuition.

There may be some truth in that, but I found Russian easier than the other languages I've studied - French, Spanish and Latin. Maybe I just had a good professor.

Now Hebrew - talk about hard!

Get the Pimsleur Russian programs I to III on CD and dive in. You will be having a lot more fun after the first 30 minute lesson. After completing Russian III I could do simple stuff in Russian and have a lot of fun with it.

Try to do everything you can do to make the language fun. On New Years eve everyone will be watching "The Irony of the Fates" on TV and you definitely should watch it. Get someone to outline the plot for you, but don't let them tell you the ending. It's a great movie.

Почаще бывай в недорогих клубах или общайся с кайфовыми людьми! И ты сам станешь кайфовым. И русским..
