Hey, everyone. I believe you'll see my "Presentation Help" a few posts below this one. Well, I'm curious if anyone is interested in checking the essay that goes along with my Rasputin presentation. It's about 1400 words, which is kind of hefty (for a student like myself). On the bright side, I've used Russian proofing tools to get rid of any stupid mistakes (case/gender agreement, spelling, etc). Here's the link: http://www.umich.edu/~afader/Rasputin.doc.

If anyone does take the time to go over this thing, I'd suggest using the MS Word inline comments/corrections tool...It's a real time-saver!

If this is asking too much from the always-generous learn_russian community, please tell me to stop!

you cannot say спорных людей in Russian; спорный is only applicable to a question, a theory or an article (спорный вопрос, спорная теория, спорная статья). Here, you better say противоречивая, загадочная фигура

странно нашедшим поддержку правительства
you do not use странно this way. Непонятно как нашедшим поддержку правительства is better

стал символом секса, разврата и даже святейшества
святейшество is a special word you use for addressing high-level priests ("ваше святейшество"). Did you mean that Rasputin was a symbol of holiness? Then it will be святости.

В детстве Распутин был смутьяном
смутьян is a political subversive, and Rasputin in his youth was probably just a troublemaker without any political background to it. Better use хулиган or скандалист.

В 18 лет он совершил первое паломничество
I think you'd better specify where he went

Люди заходили к Распутину
заходили means they casually dropped in (as neigbours). If you mean that they came to him for healing you should say приходили

Петербуржская церковь искала пророков
1. This sounds very funny, as if they placed a "wanted" ad
2. What do you mean by "Петербуржская церковь" - a certain church or Petersburg eparchy? And what does it mean искала пророков? This sentence does not make any sense to me.

власти is only authorities and you probably meant something like "holy power" - then it is something like могущество, данное от Бога

I believe that hemophilia is not a kind of illness that has fits - it is a permanent condition.

и царь Николай II очень боялся раскрытия болезни своего сына общественностью
this is bad bureaucratese. Better to say Царь боялся, что общественность узнает о болезни его сына.

Восход крестьянина к царю
восход is ONLY восход солнца. Here, it is rather "то, что крестьянин стал близок к царю"


его половый и дикий характер остался
1. половый is not a word
2. I know you mean половой but anyway you cannot say половой характер, it does not make any sense.
3. Его характер остался does not sound good either. You'd better say Он (Распутин) остался таким же диким, сексуально распущенным человеком.

Существуют доказательства существования романа между ними
существуют доказательства существования is bad. Much better: существуют (or just есть) доказательства, что между ними был роман

у либеральной интеллигенции появилась большая власть в государстве, но она была всё ещё недовольна
In this phrase, она clearly refers to власть (it is normally the closest noun that the pronoun refers to, exactly as in English) which you clearly did not mean. You better repeat интеллигенция instead of saying она, to avoid ambiguity


они кажутся плохо либералам
- это компрометирует их перед либералами or это выставляет их в плохом свете перед либералами

чрезмерное пьянство и секс, возникающие из-за его знаменитого поведения
1. does not make sense - drunkenness and sex ARE behaviour, they do not OCCUR because of behaviour
2. знаменитый is famous (with positive meaning) and you probably wanted to say something like notorious - then it will be печально знаменитый or just скандальный.

Ahh, cool! Thanks for your help. It's nice to see that some of my problems with Russian are moving away from the grammar realm and into the semantic realm...
