Vladimir Vysotsky
|
Владимир Высоцкий |
Russian Chanson |
Depending on the song - from intermediate to advanced; you may well need some knowledge of Russia's history and cultural background to fully grasp their meaning . Yet in terms of language the songs are simple and easy to understand. |
One has to get used to Vysotsky's voice. His manner is... well, powerful. The music (guitar, very simple accompaniment) doesn't get in the way of making out the words. Very good lyrics- the topics range from war to love, including pretty much everything. They are distinguished by deep psychological insight, and, not infrequently, by humor and irony, - whether you like the songs or not, they are a part if the Russian culture and well deserve listening to. |

Undervud |
Intelligent pop |
Extremely high, very challenging, idiomatic, poetic expressions, a lot of cultural hyperlinks
|
A brilliant duo, playing easy-to-listen, not at all heavy, modern and well-crafted, but not too innovative music, using different instruments and very good lyrics. Probably the best poets in modern Russian music, they're lyrics are not depressive, but ironic and charged with a lot of positive energy, even when they make your eyes water. |

Кирпичи |
Kirpichi (The Bricks) |
Ironic hip-hop/rock/punk |
Differs from quite advanced to really simple (not always easy to understand while listening, though), the band uses a great lot of common youth expressions, some offensive language |
Interesting band, started as something-like-punk, still changing to hip-hop and back to rock/punk constantly. Extremely ironic, sometimes mocking the Russian reality, still never really political nor
aggressive, even when the sound is rough. Can teach you some bad words, but also give an idea of how some of the Russian youth talk. Can require asking some native speakers to clarify the expressions, you won't find in dictionaries. |

Машина времени |
Mashina Vremeni (The Time Machine) |
straight-forward pop with guitars
|
Pretty basic |
A widely recognized, extremely popular band, started back in the USSR yet never really confronting the regime, making (they still do) simple songs about general things. The lyrics are simple, yet very well-built, showing good quality and language. Recommended for the starters.

Несчастный Случай
|
Neschatnyj Sluchaj (An Unfortunate Incident) |
Intelligent Pop
|
Moderately advanced |
They call themselves a pop-group and I agree - it's pop. It just exceeds the usual standards for Russian pop-music by... I can't even calculate this difference. They lyrics vary from aching love songs to highly ironic and sometimes abstract. Well worth to hear. |

5'nizza |
Pyatnizza (Friday) |
Reggae-pop |
Can cause some problems. Slang isn’t the biggest one – due to specific pronunciation you won’t always be able to recognize even the words you know |
An interesting duo with the most ‘afro’ vocal in FSU. Their music is influenced a lot by the Jamaican reggae and it’s
followers, but they manage to get some unique style and their last album, ‘o5’, was rated really high by the specialists. |

Кино |
Kino (The Cinema) |
Minimalist Rock
|
Simple and very well articulated, yet the language isn’t poor or primitive |
A legend of Russian 80’s rock, band, based solely on the energy and talent of it’s leader, Victor Tsoy, who died in a car accident in 1990. His strong lyrics, along with powerful manner of singing gave this band huge popularity, despite of the extremely simple music. |

Любэ |
[Lu:'be] |
Patriotic pop |
Simple enough, but with some military terms and folk expressions
|
‘The favorite band of the president’ says it all. Popular and comprehensible, melodic and patriotic. Their songs are about the Russian army and love for the motherland. The same time it’s hard to find a kitschier band in Russia and their songs all sound pretty the same. |

Zemfira |
Земфира |
Pop-rock |
Not too complicated, but poetic enough to create some problems
|
A bright star of Russian pop-rock, Zemfira Ramazanova is a good poet and fine vocalist while her band plays different, but easy to listen and touching music. |
