Sometimes I see “… потому, что …” and sometimes “… , потому что …” .
Is the place of the comma important?

i have never used comma, but apparently you can use both.

Yes, it is important.
One of the hardest things in Russian, BTW.
The rule says that you MUST put a comma in the middle of потому что when:

1) a negation particle precedes this compound conjunction:
Я прошу тебя уйти не потому, что не хочу тебя видеть, а потому, что уже поздно (I ask you to leave not because I don't want to see you, but because it's already too late.)
2) any particle with amplifying of restrictive meaning precedes потому что:
Ты уходишь только потому, что уже поздно? (are you leaving only because it's too late?)
3) there is an introductory word or introductory construction that precedes потому что:
Он ушел, скорее всего, потому, что было уже поздно (he left because it was, most likely, too late.)
4) if the construction requires потому to be a part of some homogenic list:
Он ушел и потому, что было уже поздно, и потому, что его сильно тошнило (he left because it was too late, and because he was very sick.)

In many other cases you MAY also break the compound conjunction потому что with a comma, but these four situations are when you MUST do it.
