So what verb would one use to say that someone saved old letters and photographs? Not as in, saved them from a fire, just kept them.

"Берегу" - это немного не то, не совсем "храню" (not exactly "save")
Better use "take care".

Actually I think "берегу" is fine. It means I keep them kind of tenderly, and I cherish the memories about the people and places of which these photos and letters remind me.
